Ah - the rattles and clunks....that takes me back. Have deserted 1800 ownership for a while - but no doubt will be back. The tappets used to drive me mad as well - there's an element of "they all do that sir" which is true and you just have to live with it - or nip them up a bit - on the various MG sites/forums there's tons of differing opinions about the settings - like here for instance mgparts.co.nz/fix-those-noisy-tappets/Mine turned out to be a duff cam that was wearing the lobes so it'd be alright for a bit, then go off.....I always suspected it hadn't been broken in properly when it was first fired up after being rebuilt. Cheers Andrew

Hi Andrew It seems as though you have been vaccinated with the 1800 virus; no matter what you do or subsequently drive you never quite get over it! I suspect there may be quite a few people unaware of the correct procedure for breaking in a camshaft, it's quite involved and time consuming. Did you use routinely a classic oil with ZDDP or an additive? David Ah - the rattles and clunks....that takes me back. Have deserted 1800 ownership for a while - but no doubt will be back. Found my rattle I think. nearside steering rack bush worn quite badly. Hopefully Tony Wood can advise. Tony S Quite a few components are shared with the MGB rack. Might be worth investigating. Chris.

27H 7547 is the bush. If Tony hasn't got it, AMK RACING in Denmark (!) do. I recently bought new front door locks from them. Only problem was the Danish Post Office colluding with the British Post Office to make delivery rather slow. Chris.

Steering rack bush from Denmark arrived today. Whipped out steering rack and dismantled same... After dismantling ball joint at nearside end withdrew pinion and second type rack damper.
Polyvon bush had all but disappeared. Knocked it out with a long rod from the nearside end. Bush remains were hardened and crumbled. The source of my knock/rattles.
Any way all reassembled and ready to fit back in car tomorrow. Not going to be as easy as removing it, but one happy bunny now I’ve tracked down the problem.
Funny thing though, didn’t seem to affect steering adversely but expect tyres would have borne witness at some stage. Bit like Mercedes F1 car with variable tracking!

Oh, and before i get the comments, yes the rack felt great when i stripped and cleaned it before the major reassembly . I guess that the bush had hardened over the years and when I started driving again just fell to bits. A lesson I suppose, if you have had a car laid up for many years, another part to replace before it fails. 20/20 hindsight is a marvellous thing.

Well done. Don't forget to check your tracking even so.

Oh yes. when I had the new tyres fitted they couldn’t track it because our cars are not in the computer! I said I have the settings ,but apparently computer says no. had to resort to my bits of wood and a tape measure a la old school

Looked the Trakrite up. 50 quid on Amazon. I shall think about it. Fitted the rack to car. Getting hard work this laying on my back in con fined spaces. got a distinct toe out now so set tracking tomorrow.

Dave in answer to the question, I followed the advice given here www.pipercams.co.uk/Camshaft-Installation/The second time and had no problems thereafter! In terms of oil - I always used this stuff www.millersoils.co.uk/products/classic-mini-oil-20w50-4/Tony Wood put me onto it - it includes ZDDP. In my own experience I'm convinced it improved the operation of the gearshift and helped things run a bit sweeter. It's expensive so I used to wait until I saw some on offer at car shows and the like and buy in bulk. I also used to change the oil a lot. From memory MG advised in their owners manual for the "B" to change the oil every 3,000 miles and oil and filter every 6,000 and I used to stick to that (but changed the filter at 3,000 as well as it costs buttons). Also ran one of the magnetic sump plugs which helped keep things clean - again Tony Woods advice and he supplied. A bit off topic but somewhat bizarrely am going through the same tasks with the Bristol as I did with 1800! I'm onto heater box and matrix at mo - and it's all Smiths stuff! This has been preceded by sorting out the dizzy, fuel pump, electric fan and binding rear brakes (turned out to be dodgy servo). The joys of a 50 + year old car that many have worked on over the years - some with more ability than others - that's now being pressed into regular enthusiastic use after a few years of slumber. Cheers Andrew

Thanks Andrew that's very helpful info on the camshaft installation and oil. What methods do people here use for priming the oil pump and the oilways before starting the car?
It sounds as though you are going to be and have been quite busy. Do you intend to make the Bristol your daily driver at least until the winter.
Good to hear from you
David
