Nice. How many modern cars come with a tool tray as standard?

Posting pics is hard on a lot of forums because the older ones needed the ability to link via code. I need to get the bonnet on mine done - really needs a full body restoration & respray. That top shot gave me an idea for running the metal piping for the intake under the slam panel for the bonnet so it's out the way. Has anyone btw ever managed to get those little globes off the numberplate lights. I can see what they *should* do but I don't want to break them, and I can't get them to shift whatever I try.
It looks good, they're lovely cars to drive.

All wired up now and a working fuel gauge, hurrah. Took the opportunity to run earth wires to just about every part of the car when rebuilding. Main loom has earth wire to offside rear light , so ran one from there to near side rear light and fuel gauge.
Paint job was 2pack and don’t want to scrape off for earths!
starts and runs well. Usual small leak from tappet cover . Rubbish choke cable (new one) wont lock so reverted to clothes peg to start. Either that or wife’s handbag.
Got to save up for new tyres now and a set of carpets. Tyres are Viking Sports and no cracks after nearly 40 years in dark garage but daren’t trust them.
Tyre recommendation gratefully received.

No, 40 year old tyres aren't to be trusted, no matter how good they look. Both my cars run Barum Brillantis tyres. They're a budget brand, but perfectly adequate for the driving I do. Also, if you want to stick with the 14/165/80 original size, there isn't that much choice. I had Rainmasters for many years, but you just can't get them now.

Thanks Chris. That’s what I was looking at. No telling what the bead wires are like, probably just rust now. She runs quite well once warm but time will tell as on standard needle but has fast road unleaded head now. got 98 octane in and doesn’t seem to pink but must get out and try a few hills to be sure. At least got one of the last 25d4 dizzies (original) December 1972, so easy to adjust timing.
Cheers
Tony

Falken Sincera Sn832 are the all weather tyres I'm using.
Might be an idea to put LED bulbs in brake/tail at least - visually faster light up.
If you have the bi-metallic indicator system you can use 2x 21w incandescent and the rest LED and that'll work.
I've used sealed beam 7" led headlights that are approved for Landrovers and they are *much* better than standards - a whiter and brighter light for much less power draw.
I'm using a "KW" needle with the ram air intake that is installed on mine - it's almost the same profile as the standard TW that comes with the single carb - but 15-20% richer point for point. Mine was running lean at about 50-55mph on flat.

Thanks for info. Wired mine up with headlamp relays so much better lights. 17acr alternator so lights pretty good.
Just ordered new carpet set (arm and a leg) then new tyres and orf we go.

Rosie, how does the smaller diameter of the tyre affect gearing and speedo reading ?

Rosie, how does the smaller diameter of the tyre affect gearing and speedo reading ? As far as I know they're the same diameter - and tbh the speedo will have a 2.5% accuracy allowance at the best of times. The reichspiglets will generally give you a 5mph leeway in a 30 anyway. I'm more concerned about grip and safety and those are the top rated AW tyres in professional tests that'll fit an ADO17 with standard wheels. I know that the Wolseley has got better grip and handling on those tyres than a 2010 Kia Rio - because I've been able to compare the two unfortunately. LEDs will still be better than incandescent for light and visibility - relayed or not, their light up time is 75% faster - I've compared that myself. The difference in fog is incredible - I could have run 60mph where others were doing 20mph,and signs & cateyes show up much better - but you pays your money I guess. Personally if I can fit an upgrade to make it safer, more economical or improve any system, I'll fit it. If you are going to use a classic as an everyday car, then you fit remanufactured radials from the 60s and end up having an accident because you couldn't stop in time when you could have stopped safely with modern tyres - then you should be banned from driving. You have deliberately put yourself in a position where you are running on worse than second best equipment (conceivably what was the dogs nuts in 1964 might well be worse than 6th rate Korean crap now), and put others at risk as well as yourself. (this doesn't really apply to vehicles pre modern tyre types/fitments - you just have to get the best you can get there). All my exterior lights (except the rear numberplate (which I STILL can't undo)) are LED - for lower power use, faster reaction time (brake lights especially), better reliability, better light - yes virtually every car following me can stop faster than I can, but I'm amazed at how many modern cars I see with a headlight or even both headlights out at night - all incandescent and all dangerous. I did 11 miles one night and one person had forgotten lights full stop and probably 25% had one or more headlights out. I've had LEDs fitted throughout in last two cars and they'll be fitted if I have any more.
