Thanks Andrew Considering at one time I rebuilt a Moggy Traveller from a box of bits, a rolling chassis, 2 engines and loads of new parts to make it close to concourse before selling it to someone in Ireland, all this being useless is so distressing. I even ended up on the floor on Tuesday and couldn’t get up again, even with Rach’s help. We had to call a neighbour for extra assistance. Still in great pain from that 4 days later

Thanks Dave. No water ingress (non visible on dipstick and no mayonnaise) Been lucky twice now with that Had the Mercedes pre MOT tested yesterday as it is now my only useable car. Have a list of bushes and brakes to buy which I can get about the quarter of the price garage will charge. Trouble is, unlike Mo, I have no idea what these parts look like and there are variations for some of them. Hmmm …….

Thanks Andrew. Mo’s gearbox came from Tony several years ago and I took the engine out then to fit it. It is remarkable what he can come up with - but sadly not a steering rack which I have been after for years. When I make a decision what I am going to do I will have the spare head checked. Checked and rebuilt elsewhere the was I am now would be a wise decision. I am even worse than I thought now - got Rach a replacement phone and last night it took me 20 minutes just to fit the SIM card as I shake so much!

Been pricing up valves, guides, valve springs etc so head can be rebuilt in my lounge over winter. It came off a known good engine, and rebuilding it over months should be achievable for me. Ear ache from Her Ladyship will have to be tolerated 😂 Another alternative would be to buy a refurbished engine and clutch complete so it is just a case of one engine out and another one in. Will see. Mo has been oily ragged to deter any winter rust. She is also under a breathable car cover as dirt whirls around the basement car park and everything gets filthy standing for a long period in there.

I have a spare cylinder head which will be fitted as the current one must have warped I thought that oil seal was replaced when clutch was done in 2020, but the symptoms are oil being present. I don’t know where else it could have come from. Car has only covered 2000 miles since new clutch fitted. It certainly will not be going back to that garage. They may have neglected to fit a new seal (I did supply them with one). Difficult thing to check As health deteriorates and I can do even less work I will have to see how I am after winter. It may be that my favourite car which I have owned since 2006 has to move on. Original owner had her from 1969 until 1997, she had 2 more owners between then and 2006 when she came to me. I don’t know anyone with an MGB. I used to own one in the mid 70’s - an MGB GT. Only time I ever got a speeding ticket as rear view not good and a policeman on a motorcycle couldn’t be seen. I took the engine out of that a couple of times as it was so easy and no gearbox attached to add to the weight

Best of luck with that. I have been looking for 3 years without success Beware of the reconditioned ones advertised on eBay as although it stated they are for 1800 they aren’t. They are for the Princess

Took her out for fuel this morning as I had her booked in for MOT tomorrow. Double whammy - head gasket blew again and I lost the clutch. Suspect seal may have gone and oil got in. Stuck 200 yards from home. AA came after 90 minutes and towed me home. I will store her for winter and decide by Spring what to do. It is expensive paying someone else to do the work ☹️

The guy the mobile mechanic was talking to was quoting 70 Newton Meters and not ft/lbs. They are roughly the same Head now tightened down to 50 ft/lbs and the engine just purrs Will take her on the short run to pub on Sunday and if all OK get him back to change the oil Not being able to do things myself is frustrating and expensive 😳

Yes I have both the Haynes and BMC red binder workshop manuals On his first visit I told the mechanic 45 to 50 and it was the final turn to 50 when the head bolt sheared. He didn’t say anything when he was working the second time. It was only when he texted me that evening that I knew he only torqued to 40. Head now has all new bolts I have new oil and filter but want to be sure first the job’s a good un. No mayonnaise visible so running up to temperature should be OK. He did check to make sure the head hadn’t warped

Thanks Chris
I have an awful feeling about this head gasket. When I first started Mo I could see water spout out of the radiator and very soon the engine was hot, both signs of a blown gasket. It didn’t register in my old brain until mechanic texted me to ask to come back and increase the torque If I can manage, I will check again this morning to see if there is any water ingress in the oil At £200 a time, plus parts, this repair is getting expensive

David Mobile mechanic came again today and new head gasket fitted. He has just texted me to say he torqued the bolts to 40 ft/lb and is wondering if they are tight enough. He wants to tighten them to 70 ft/lb. I think the manual says 45 What do you think? Dave

Managed to get a mobile mechanic to come 2 weeks ago David and in 3 hours a new head gasket was fitted. Torquing the final head bolt it sheared. Several rude words uttered New gasket set and bolts obtained and he is returning next Tuesday to do it all again Old gasket had blown between cylinders 2 and 3. Oddly no water had leaked into the oil - it had all blown out through the exhaust as white smoke Such is life

Took Mo to pub at lunchtime because it wasn’t raining. On the way home she blew the head gasket. Oh, bother (or words to that effect)
