Couldn't agree more - my car v.similar under a reasonably pretty exterior. Previous bod did circa 100 miles a year and obviously had a "friendly" mot chap. Mainly as a result of following your thread I've enrolled on welding course which starts next year - shame I didn't do the course before I bought the car.

Well the engine's not out yet and welding work is not going as quick as I'd hoped! Although one side is almost done. To be fair I've added a few bits and bobs as I went along. I've had grand plans to rebuild the engine and gearbox but I must say apart from heavy mystery oil consumption there was nothing wrong with the way either the engine or gearbox operated. As I'm keen not to spend the national debt just yet I'm coming round to just putting it back in once the welding's done and enjoy using the car. Have toyed with the idea of Peter Burgess head and different cam whilst the engine's out but am concerned that up ing the power quite dramatically without checking out the bottom end may be asking for trouble. Gut feeling is to get back behind the wheel and if in 10 months I really feel I need more power, then do the job properly then. Any views opinions gratefully received. Cheers

Peter Burgess is doing the head - would have done the whole thing but can't do that until May/June! he's kindly given me all the specs for the engine I'm after and recommended machine shops etc. Am going to let the guys who are doing the rest of the car build the engine on the understanding that they'll stand by it (and the gearbox rebuild)should there be problems. It's a pretty well trod path so there shouldn't be too many issues - although that hasn't been the story so far!! Out of interest, the price he's quoted for the head is much cheaper than I could get elsewhere and he'll supply the cam etc cheaper than I could buy retail. The dizzy is going to the Distributor Dr who comes highly recommended by many and the SU's are going back to Burlen/SU for a freshen up. The will be used in a spirited fashion and the odd sprint/hillclimb 12 car rally once finished so I'm trying to achieve a balance between more torque/power and retaining some of it's original and IMHO lovely character...we'll see!

I've had quite a few bits off him, but never met him! Right hand side of my car is nearly done and inner wings from lokari arrive Friday - will post some pictures on my rebuild bit and see what everyone thinks. Missed vgc petrol tank on ebay today. As engine out am going to go the whole hog on that, big bore, big cam etc etc, just working out who's going to do which bits. As I say will update my rebuild post soon, with photos.

I'm sure it's no comfort, but you're cheering me up! Mine's ground to a standstill as welding chap is on holiday for a week - mine not quite as bad as yours but have ended up doing all the sills. a lot of metalwork around the suspension carriers and the rear inner wing. Engine out next week to do the front end, then back down the other side! As it will be a sort of rally car once it's finished am taking the opportunity to do other jobs while the interiors out eg. fixings for "rally seats" although originals will go back in for the time being, enlarging the "humps" under the rear seat for wider suspension carriers. Seemed to have lost the knack of posting pictures but will post some more under my resto when more to report. Cheers Andrew

Aside from the club, most useful bloke I've come across is Ray House 07891-888685.

Hi Paul - I'm going through the same sort of fun and games as you it appears! What I'd hoped was going to be a few period mods a few weeks ago is turning into redoing everything vaguely structural! Good luck. Andrew

On mine the wings are already off - in one piece - and the valance is about to come off - the inner wing has been beefed up a bit as well. Planning to use "rivnuts" - see my post under Andrews 1800S in rebuild section for details when I get to it. Andrew

Good question - have tended to always buy with heart rather than head and this car has a lot going for it - great interior (recent) the "S" bits and bobs and so on. I expected to have to so some work at some point, but not to this degree and I'm extremely doubtful it should have had an MOT. The old man had one of these and rust was an issue after 7 years so I should have known. On the plus side, parts are cheap (relatively) so if I was handy at welding it would be an inconvenient challenge rather than a bank balance altering nightmare. Mucking about with old cars is rarely an inexpensive pastime IMHO but that's one of the reasons why I go to work! Engine's coming out tomorrow by the way as a teeny weeny bit more rot discovered!!!! Cheers Andrew

Having been massively depressed - this was bought from a dealer - more of that later...it's starting to come back together quite nicely! Fuel tank returns tomorrow - hopefully as good as new and new drivers side metal work shouldn't take too long. Cheers Andrew

Lot more pictures on the photobucket thing pls use the link above - except I can't seem to make them appear here and you have to go backwards through the slideshow (?!) - no wonder I'm having problems with the car! You can see evidence of mice but they'd moved out before I got the car. Drivers side going back together this week - just waiting for front valance. Only other slight mods will be enlarging the bumps under the back seat pending bigger displacers/slightly wider arms and creating a bit more space in the wheel arches, then we start on other side....

Am interested in doing this swop as well - and found a great article with step by step instructions on how to do it and what mods are required. Unfortunately I didn't bookmark it ... once I find it again I'll post something on here.
