Hi Paul - I'm going through the same sort of fun and games as you it appears! What I'd hoped was going to be a few period mods a few weeks ago is turning into redoing everything vaguely structural! Good luck. Andrew

Hi All So here the next thrilling installment, this weekends work and as i suspected horrors lerking below, i must say Roger Rodgers and trigger must be still going, the only thing i haven't found is newsapaper stuufed in holes but then again i haven't unearthed everything yet, the guys who did the repairs on the morris mustn't have any shame and shres in a filler company. Engine work First Head off nice to see that it looks like the right " s " head Rocker need looking at, bit of wear on the rocker themselves A few carbon deposits on the pistons, looks like i was ruuning very rich, which i know because i have to redo the carbs and timing when i first got it Now for the rusty bits drilling out the spot welds now to the nasty bits, 1/4" of filler to cover up rusty wings Wing now removed, i think the wing is repairable, but these are the horros below Next job it to remove the engine/gearbox, remove the other wing and see what i need to do. I have ordered sills. Does anybody know if you can buy and other body parts from anywhere, the ffornt panels etc? Please feel free to use the photos Paul

Aside from the club, most useful bloke I've come across is Ray House 07891-888685.

Head and pistons don't look bad at all - the middle two pots can be really carbonised when set up to run rich. What's happened with the rockers? Wear on the shaft or the rockers themselves?
Chris.

Hi Chris It looks like one of the adjusting screws stripped but also groves on the push rod face of the rocker, not too bad but whilst they are off will look at changing.Still trying to make my mind up as to whether the get the head converted to unleaded(at risk of starting a debate). The rest of the engine and box just needs a good clean and paint back too origunal green, probably a check the clutch and timing gear. Plenty to do before all that Paul

I've had quite a few bits off him, but never met him! Right hand side of my car is nearly done and inner wings from lokari arrive Friday - will post some pictures on my rebuild bit and see what everyone thinks. Missed vgc petrol tank on ebay today. As engine out am going to go the whole hog on that, big bore, big cam etc etc, just working out who's going to do which bits. As I say will update my rebuild post soon, with photos.

If you want the job doing properly and you're prepared to pay PETER BURGESS is the man you want. There is almost nothing that he doesn't know about the "B" series engine. Chris.

On that debate I'd say that if you have the head rebuilt with new valves and such, go for an unleaded conversion and add some unleaded seats too. I had mine done decades ago. Additives never give me that peace of mind. I'm not even sure they work at all... But if you have a good running engine and don' t drive much or hard. See how long it lasts you. It might last decades too. Valve seat damage mostly starts at engine revs over 3000rpm. So if you only drive local roads, you might be fine. But check tappet clearances annually/often or at every service. Even with a converted head. Modern fuels are different in many ways.

Peter Burgess is doing the head - would have done the whole thing but can't do that until May/June! he's kindly given me all the specs for the engine I'm after and recommended machine shops etc. Am going to let the guys who are doing the rest of the car build the engine on the understanding that they'll stand by it (and the gearbox rebuild)should there be problems. It's a pretty well trod path so there shouldn't be too many issues - although that hasn't been the story so far!! Out of interest, the price he's quoted for the head is much cheaper than I could get elsewhere and he'll supply the cam etc cheaper than I could buy retail. The dizzy is going to the Distributor Dr who comes highly recommended by many and the SU's are going back to Burlen/SU for a freshen up. The will be used in a spirited fashion and the odd sprint/hillclimb 12 car rally once finished so I'm trying to achieve a balance between more torque/power and retaining some of it's original and IMHO lovely character...we'll see!

Seems a bit of a shame, really. We met at Tatton (Short scruffy beardy bloke trying to find a Hydropump) and you seemed quite made up with the car. She was certainly looking the business at the time. I suppose a smart suit disguises so much. In some ways, it's worse than the one I'm on with - at least I had no expectations of the car when I started! Looking forward to see her coming back together again, Chris.

Yeah hi Chris I didn't need to scratch the surface too deep, but hopefully itb will return a lot better and safeter condition. I am a bit like that though, as the car was built by somebody else i never felt it was mine, but after the rebuild it will be all my own work and then can be considered as mine. Done this on a couple of vehicles now, you can't beat getting stuck into a car to appriciate it better and also i will know every inch of it by the time i finish, never to be concour but hopefully and excellent example for years to come.
