You'll also need a steering column, as the fitment to the rack is different. It doesn't have the rubber coupling. Ah I didn't know that - Tony has one though!
Sitting around stuck inside at this time of year and having dangerous thoughts - has anybody ever tried to mate a Maxi/Allegro E4 5-speed gearbox assembly with an E6?

I have decided to buy a cheap and most likely wrecked Maxi gearbox to have a look. Even if it could made to be fit I think it would need strengthening to handle the weight and torque of the Crab & E6.
But my curiosity will be satisfied!

Some years back, a LOCI member mated an Ambassador box to an 1800 engine. I think that would have been the 4 speed "O" box onto the "B" engine. He made it work with a some cutting and grinding and making some cover plates. It suggests that what you're thinking is within the bounds of possibility.
That said, I don't think anybody was ever really taken with the Maxi gearshift, cable or rod.
Chris.

Yes I've heard it was not a fantastic one.
I've also been browsing for caravans so that would limit me to about 50mph - four gears is plenty for that!

I've recently had time to pull apart the seized Maxi engine and have a look. The top end is rather rusty, perhaps a write-off, but there was still oil in the sump and the bits I'm interested in look shiny.
Clutch and flywheel off and it looks encouragingly familiar. House move should be done this month and I'll be able to get the crab out of storage.

Crab is out of storage and I'd left some heavy things in the boot. I hope it levels out!

Indeed it has! The mini rally course I ended up doing in the snow to pick up some timber from Stroud likely did it.
Crab is my only functioning car now as the Minor 1000 still isn't back together and the Pao's gearbox went bang. It has taken a while to source those parts (mercifully cheap stuff from scrappies, at least).
The crab is such a fun and comfortable daily. I feel oddly smug parking my luxurious barge next to moderns that cost quite literally 10x more!

And great in the snow….even better on winter tyres!

Vredestein Sprint Classic 165s on the front at the moment. I rate them extremely highly but they're a bit pricey compared to your budget Landsail and so on, hence them only being on the front!
I do plan to get an set of steel wheels for winter tyres when finances allow!

Back in the early 1970s when there were only a fraction of the cars on the UK roads, it was great fun driving the 1800 on the snow and ice. The Dunlop SP Sports tyres were fairly soft and a good compromise between grip and wear, but I also had some wheels with SP44s for when it was really slippery.

The sprint classic is an excellent tyre. I had some Continental winter tyres on my steel wheels and they were great in the snow and stunning in torrential rain and standing water in the end I left them on all the time! I think I got them from an online outfit and just kept an eye out for when they were having a sale.

Another long trip in the 2200 down to Devon, around a bit, and back again to Gloucestershire where I'm now based.
The car didn't miss a beat but I worry about the whine through all the gears being the idler bearing and it's also tiring on the ears. Speaking of - I don't think the previous owner has done a great job fitting the nice expensive new carpet they got as it slips about and there is no sound deadening material under it. One could drive in a significantly quieter cabin with some rubber damping mats on the wheel arches, some extra underfelt, proper door seals, stopping the rear wheels from rumbling, cancel out the exhaust drone at 50-55, and sorting whatever is whining.
The list of jobs grows again!
The weather in the south west may also necessitate adding an intermittent wiper switch and finding some blades that don't bloody squeak!

If the whining is excessive and doesn't go away when the carpets and sound deadening are fitted properly. Have you checked the oil or any signs of aluminium? The idler gear tab washers are prone to failing which can lead to all kinds of nasties. Well worth checking.

I replaced the Furflex door edging on mine with some stuff with a tubular rubber section on it, which made a remarkable difference. www.woolies-trim.co.uk/c-37-side-seals was the stuff. The original carpet had 1" thick horse hair bonded to the underside, which is pretty effective. Mate Snoopy has used Dynamat extensively on his car to good effect. I've been driven mad by squeaky wipers. The best solution I have yet found was a cheap replacement blade from Halfords, which I cut in half and reloaded the wipers with. Fiddly, but it has shut them up. Rear wheel bearings shouldn't rumble... Quite easy to replace on these. Nearside hub nut is a left hand thread.... Chris.
