Hi Tommy I wonder if the fibre/plastic heel on the nos stock has possibly degraded over the years since it was made and wears down faster - just a thought, no evidence. Why are you using the single chain? The first thing I did with both my Mk111 cars was to fit duplex chains as they stretch far less. I also preferred the double valve springs and if you are using them with a single chain it may stretch a little bit more. IMOH I don't think it's worth trying to set the dynamic timing at 600rpm on a worn engine with backlash in the timing gear. The 14 degrees at 1,000 rpm quoted for Mk111 HC cars fitted with the same 25D4 or 45D4 distributor should be more reliable. Or you could use the John Twist method and set the maximum timing (no vacuum) to around 36 degrees at 4,400 rpm and let the idle sort itself out on the basis no engine damage occurs at idle from an incorrect setting whereas at high rpm and load excessive advance is definitely not good. Hi Chris! Glad to hear you sorted it! Have you found the reason why the points keep closing up? In fact I've just experienced this on mine too. Didn't really notice any misfire or anything, but during a check I found the dwell angle to be well above 70 % and the points gap was very small, couldn't even get a 0.014 feeler gauge in. Tommy

Grrr - headlamps have gone out.
Can't fix them at the moment - it's dark.

Both? The switch perhaps? I'd check voltage at the switch, if current is getting to the switch, and out of it. Other than that, bad earth connection?
There should be one wire going from the solenoid, supplying the light switch only.

It might be the feed to the hi-lo switch on the floor - I've had trouble with that before. No flash on the stalk either. Will investigate in daylight.

Prince of Darkness strikes again . Bad fuse contact, always start with the obvious! Good luck David It might be the feed to the hi-lo switch on the floor - I've had trouble with that before. No flash on the stalk either. Will investigate in daylight. Chris.

Headlights are not protected by a fuse, are they?

You are right of course Tommy why use a fuse when the wiring loom can act just as well as one; Lucas logic. David Headlights are not protected by a fuse, are they? Tommy

Fooled me - bad earth in the engine bay. Side lights and the extra sidelights in the headlamp bowls have their own earths.
Another hour and a half of my life I'll never see again........

I think the time is coming to put her away for a few months. The speedo cable broke this evening. The bonnet has started popping up on its own and the lights are playing up again. It's the switch this time - I moved the dashboard to look at the speedo cable. The exhaust manifold is blowing again and she's down on power. She's definitely telling me something.

She's just envious with the Austin!
They can do with a time out now and then, and so can we! That's the advantage of having two. I was so fed up with the blue one, when I put it away. After a year and a half it was like getting a new car when I took it out, and my motivation was in deed back. The strange thing is, it has behaved ever since. Not sure why the shake while driving and stiff suspension could just disappear while it was laid up, but it did.
I'm sometimes convinced these cars are somehow living creatures and have a spirit and mind of their own....
Put her away, pack her in and get back to her in spring!

Got Eugenie through the test this week, couple of advisories too deal with though. Both steering gaiters are about to let go and one front tyre scrubbing. Tracking needs to be checked.

I've had Eugenie in the garage over the past week. Both steering rack gaiters have been replaced with the Bailcast universal ones. In addition, the o/s hairy rubber spider has been changed. Awkward job - front of car in the air, two of the U clamps seem to be most easily fitted from the top, so being a short@rse, I was working in the engine bay whilst up a step ladder........ God only knows what the HSE would have made of it.
