Enjoy your sand castles. I cannot believe the ongoing sage of you and distributor timing plates it must be some kind of record. Is your middle name Lucas any any chance regards David

Glad to hear she's going well! Some funny issues with that distributor:-)
Enjoy your holiday! PS, as we're on the subject of the Prince of darkness: you know why the British drink warm beer? Lucas made the refrigerators;-)
BTW Chris, I'm sending you a PM.
Regards, Tommy:-)

Two. And condensers, plugs, cap, leads, coil, clutch slave, clutch hose, top and bottom hoses........ Well, Mr RAC man won't have them these days.

Home again. 983 miles completed with no further incedents. Had a grand week in Cornwall and WOCFest was a considerable success if you allow for the appalling weather. I'll put some pics up in the gallery later.

Just how far back in the thread are you, Chris? Is that the four springs poking through the gasket when I was swapping the engine? I refitted all of them, so it should be all right. Chris.

Been a while since I put anything here.
Had to sort the ignition out during the week. She was starting to run rough and "jolt" a bit as the revs rose. Went to the LOCI club night on Tuesday - ran OK there and back, but didn't really want to idle all that well. Got home, while parking up in the pub car park she died and just didn't want to re-start. Rather than kill the battery, I left it 'til Wednesday morning. Got up a bit more betimes and got stuck in. Points had closed up (expected) so re-set them. No go. Swapped the condenser, No go. Looking at the the distributor cap showed the centre brush to be flush with the plastic slide and dull black. That will be the condenser then, won't it? Swapped on the one from the red one and off we went, quite nicely if I do say so myself.
That evening, I had a proper look at the distributor cap, as it wasn't all that old. Having a poke at the centre brush, expecting it to have burnt away to nothing showed that it had merely stuck in the centre slider. Pulled it out, cleaned everything and it now moves freely again. I have put it to one side for future experimentation.
Really do need to get the red one mobile. There is a growing list of small jobs that need to dealt with.
Chris.

Hi Chris!
Glad to hear you sorted it! Have you found the reason why the points keep closing up? In fact I've just experienced this on mine too. Didn't really notice any misfire or anything, but during a check I found the dwell angle to be well above 70 % and the points gap was very small, couldn't even get a 0.014 feeler gauge in.
I believe the plastic heel could wear quickly on cheap repro part, but I'm using old stock quality bits only and lubricate the cam.
Also, there is an odd difference between the static and dynamic setting. If I set it at 9 degrees static, the dynamic reading is around 16 degrees at very slow idle (no advance). It should be 12.
I guess this is where Dave will mention timing chain slack:-)
I'm changing the timing chain and wheels anyway this winter, while fitting the Burgess rebuilt cylinder head. I'm running a single chain now, and have original nos chain and sprocket wheels ready to fit. Hope the cylinder head gets here soon. I got a mail asking if I wanted it painted green, so suppose it's nearly finished:-)

Hi Tommy, sounds like exciting times ahead. I bought these and some spares points, condensers and red rotor arms from THE DISTRIBUTOR DOCTOR as he has a reputation for quality components. I suspect that the real reason is that I haven't adjusted them since August.......... Not so sure about timing chain slack - bit of stretch on the advance springs for the weights can give similar symptoms. Again, you can get them from the Distributor Doctor. Back into the garden - making up a new fuel line for the red one out of 5/ 16" Cunifer. It appears to be stronger than me. Chris.

OK! I fitted the points in May, and have driven it every day since:-) I guess it could be normal then.
The distributor is rebuilt by the very same Distributordoctor, so unlikely there's something wrong there. Anyway it runs well, so no problem really. Just a bit curious, as the dynamic timing shouldn't really be more than around 3 degrees advanced, compared to the static timing (at slow idle).
I suppose the dynamic setting is the important one, so I set it to around 12 degrees at slow idle and ignore the static timing. I run 95 now, and always listen for pinking. Can't hear anything except occasionally when going up some seriously steep hill at low speed in fourth gear.
Looking forward to further progress with your red one. It must be a relief to work on mechanics, after all the welding:-)
Tommy
