That's annoying about the Dynamo. Ever considered getting an alternator?
She's looking great mate, you should be very proud of her!

Little bit of time has passed since I put anything here; apologies - work has been a trifle manic. Charging issue appears to have been resolved. I replaced the RB340 regulator box with the new spare on the shelf, re-brushed the dynamo just in case, re-polarised if for the same reason and changed the belt. It now works, so it was one of them........... Last weekend saw a run down to RAF Coningsby with the Wolseley Owners Club - 220 miles has taken the car up over the 1000 mile mark, so I enjoyed the the last bit of the run back rather more! She runs up to 70mph quite happily. I haven't thrashed the car in any way, and the 70mph burst was just a couple of miles on the M62. Temperature rose a little more than I expected, but a check of the cooling system on Sunday didn't reveal any obvious problems. I also did the oil change on Sunday. In the absence of a magnet-on-a-string, I used my extendible magnetic pick-up tool (Ooh, matron...... ) to give the used oil a good stir. Nothing was collected, so things are looking pretty good. Various Wolseleys at RAF Coningsby. P45.

That's annoying about the Dynamo. I don't think the fault was traced to the dynamo; could have been the control box. I've found the dynamo very reliable and don't see a need to replace with an alternator unless you run extra lights and things.

Could just be the engine is still a little tight. Not sure if you ever got round to checking your crank pulley timing marks ;D It's certainly been quiet on the forum the last week, I put it down to the bad weather and the football - the matches are screened here around 1:45 am so am feeling disorientated! regards David I haven't thrashed the car in any way, and the 70mph burst was just a couple of miles on the M62. Could just be the engine is still a little tight. Hopefully eased off - idle hasn't risen again. Not sure if you ever got round to checking your crank pulley timing marks ;D Errrrrrrr......... Nope. Checked plugs and the middle two are (of course) looking a tad rich, the outers look cock on. No pinking, despite a few minor tweaks, so I've pretty much left things alone. It's certainly been quiet on the forum the last week, I put it down to the bad weather and the football - the matches are screened here around 1:45 am so am feeling disorientated! Yes - show season has started; not much major work is happening. Nick (No. 1 twin) and I have managed to follow most of the games. England are making hard work of it. We aren't going to win, playing like that. Keef, I rather suspect that the belt was the guilty party. It had plenty of tension, but you could grab the dynamo pulley and, with reasonable effort, turn it. The belt is fairly new, but is a modern rubber one, notched on the inside. Looked a bit skinny to me when I took it off. My last canvas encased one is now fitted. Chris.

Maybe you now have more volts and so the temperature gauge reads higher if its (separate) voltage regulator is a bit tired? Charging issue appears to have been resolved. Aaargh! Bl@@dy charging system again...... LOCI meet at York is a 70 mile round trip - running back on sidelights last night and the charging light started to glow (not fully on). Headlights for the last few miles. Belt again - major amount of movement to re-tension. New belt just "giving", I hope.
Fingers crossed for Sunday - LOCI National Rally at Cars in the Park at Litchfield.
Chris.

She's running at the top of "N" when cruising. If I run at 70mph for any distance, the gauge creeps up just above. She's running the same sender as the old engine, but has the thermostat fitted by the Gold Seal boys. I have no idea how old that is. I think I'll get some more miles on board before considering changing the thermostat. I suspect that she's a little hot due to the new engine bedding in, so she might just ease down a little with time.
Hopefully going down to Cornwall for a break some time in August - that's a 750 mile round trip. I'll see what happens then.
Chris.

Should it rest in the middle of N when going down the highway? as that's what mine tends to do if I recall correctly.
Around town she seems to take a while to warm up and normally sits on the lower end of N.
Sorry to hijack lol

I have accidentally cooked two previous sensors at various times, usually due to minor incompetence. Each replacement has given a slightly different reading on the gauge when compared with its predecessor. However, this is the same sender as used on the old engine, so I'm certain that this engine is running hotter. New thermostat (GTS104 - 82c) is £6.10 and the new uber-gasket (GTG101X) is a staggering £0.95 from my local Moss Europe, so it's a bit of a no-brainer really. I'll get them swopped at the weekend. Hopefully, Indy, that'll put the needle back in the middle where it ought to be! Chris.

You may find this attachment interesting about calibrating temperature sensors. I think it shows quite clearly that there are good reasons why you need to be concerned about deviation from the normal running temperature on the gauge and why it may be a good reason to actually calibrate it. All you need is a thermometer and a multimeter plus a potentiometer (available for a few pence) to substitute for the sensor while calibrating. This way you will know what temperature your car is actually running at. Attachments:
