Good information David, thank you.
Thermostat swapped, new gasket and system topped up. Needle now sitting exactly in the centre of the N in the normal range. I haven't gone for a proper blast yet, but it looks like the temperature has dropped. Which is nice.
Also found out that I have failed to tighten the distibutor clamp plate........ All together now - "IDIOT!".
I have to do a wedding on Friday for one of my wife's friends from church, so this evening the young people's discipleship group descended upon the car and did a pretty fair job of cleaning, polishing, hoovering and wiping. She's looking pretty tidy. Unfortunately, MrsP has bought me a hat. I look ridiculous, but taller. What she doesn't know is that my Soviet Red Star will arrive tomorrow. Tovarich.
Chris.

Ah, well........ you see, the bride's a Goth and the groom a biker and they're both in their 40's, so whatever you fancy, really.
Bit of a shame - it never quite stopped raining, but everybody enjoyed themselves. Strangely enough, the fact that I've had a haircut seemed to be bigger news than the wedding itself!
Car is still running a tad hot. Further investigation required.
Chris.

Back from Cornwall - 800 miles completed almost without incident. 9 hours to do the 354 miles back home was a bit much for her, running very hot indeed and requiring the heater going full blast to stop her boiling; before the ignition cut out about 20 miles from home. Malcolm in his Big Orange Toolbox actually got it going again, but is of the opinion that the ignition module is cooked. As far as I'm concerned, he's a genius. Followed us home to Yeadon just to be on the safe side and commented that "It doesn't hang about, does it?" I didn't tell him I was going slowly to let him keep up in his Transit....... So........ today I checked out the cooling system. Colour suggested that there wasn't a great deal of anti-freeze in the mix, so I drained the radiator and had great fun blasting the radiator and waterways with the garden hose. All nice and clean, which was nice. Refilled it with a 50/50 mix. A quick run out suggested that this had had no effect whatsoever. In the end, I did the tappets (all tight - engine now ticks in the approved "B" series fashion), checked the plugs: Lovely set of biscuit coloured plugs - at least the mixture is right. And then....... noticed that the dizzy had moved. Again. Despite nipping up the clamp plate as above. Re-timed it, (it had better be right - the plate isn't going anywhere now) and now she's running beautifully. Had a nice long run out and the temperature has refused to leave the "N" range. Otherwise, half a pint of oil was added and that's about it. That should keep David happy. ;D Just the binding n/s caliper to sort out now........... Always something to do. Chris.

Hmm happy?? Looks as though your hot running may have been due to the ignition becoming retarded as the dizzy moved. If so it may have cooked your ignition unit, but hopefully that will recover. Guess I can't nag you anymore about finding TDC as it seems your dizzy isn't moving again Glad you had a good trip regards David And then....... noticed that the dizzy had moved. Again. Despite nipping up the clamp plate as above. Re-timed it, (it had better be right - the plate isn't going anywhere now) That should keep David happy. ;D Chris.

Cheer up, David. ;D
NGK BP6E plugs, Indy. They seem to suit her. I used Champions and Unipart ones in the past with poor results.
Bit more done today. Sticky nearside caliper freed up and a bit of a blow from the exhaust box dealt with. Replacement igntion module came in the week, so that has been subbed on. The old one is in the boot, as it is still working - just in case........
Had a decent run out around the area and the temperature seems a lot more stable and lower.
Off down to Tatton Park for a show with the Wolseley Owners Club tomorrow morning, which should be about an hour and a half each way with some motorway driving. Should be a decent test.
I'll get some pics.
Chris.

Replaced engine end mount - HERE. Rear one tomorrow........ Chris.

Rear one tomorrow........ Done. I have the scars to prove it....... Old one, delaminating top and bottom - it's in there somewhere. Should be a nice simple job - undo five nuts and bolts, remove mount and replace. However - there is minimal room to work and the twin carb set-up with the heat shield on my car makes things worse. So, brace up engine on the trolley jack and undo the nuts and bolts, whilst skinning knuckles and the back of your hand. Recover dead engine mount and all nuts and bolts from under car. After some experimenting, I realised that you need to attach the mount to the engine first. You can just about do the top one from the top, the bottom one can only be accessed from underneath. Start the nuts but don't tighten. The new rubber isn't sagging like the old one, so the engine has to be raised a surpising amount to try and align the rear of the mounting with the bulkhead. Again, start the nuts. Remove trolley jack and lock everything up. That was easy, wasn't it? No it isn't! It's a horrible messy fiddly job that took me three hours. My best advice is to persuade someone else to do it, preferably a left-handed midget with six feet arms. Old one peeling top and bottom. Scratched, scored and bloodied flipper. It's nastier than trying to repair a Whirlpool dishwasher. Timing issues continue........ The clamp ring just doesn't work. My nicely re-set dizzy had slipped back to it former (retarded) position and can be rotated with only mild force. Off down to Moss for a 3H2138 clamp plate tomorrow. Chris.

Great work, Chris!
My mounts are splitting again, too, so guess I'll have to change them.. I think I'll go for the LOCI version of the big one, too and possibly make my own mounts. It would be better if the engine rested on the mounts, like the Princess 1800. The engine mountings are the only bad thing about the 1800, I feel:-)
Strange about the distributor coming loose. I had the opposite problem with the Marina recently. The distributor was absolutely stuck, I'm sure it hasn't been moved since 1975. I finallt made it, using loads of penetrating oil and an oil filter wrench. Broke the distributor though. Too bad, as it has 17 000 kms on the clock..
Speaking of ignition timing, what do you adjust to Chris?
Regards, Tommy

Interesting....... This the same dizzy and clamp plate transfered over from the old engine. On the old engine, it was an absolute s@d to try and move. In some ways, I'm rather glad that the engine came out, as it let me "get at" the dizzy properly - it took a large screwdriver to force the plate open and a considerable amount of brute force to actually remove the dizzy. I did spend some time and knock the clamp plate back into shape, but that obviously hasn't worked. Moss Europe are showing stock, so I think I'll spend the money and replace it.
As for the engine resting on the mounts, I will keep the old mount and have a play over the winter. I think welding a "shelf" onto the existing brackets would allow some sort of rubber block to be mounted to work in compression rather than sheer.
Chris.

Tommy are you serious? We aren't even sure Chris' pulley timing marks are correct (Sorry I promised not to nag about finding tdc again!) Speaking of ignition timing, what do you adjust to Chris? Regards, Tommy

Tommy are you serious? We aren't even sure Chris' pulley timing marks are correct I heard that......... Look, whatever is happening with the engine, I'm not too far off with the settings. The summer has let me get a bit of a handle on what is happening, so, I will shortly be able to invest some time (Work, kids and MrsP allowing) to sort this once and for all. I believe that the last component has now fallen into place with the clamp plate, so a proper fix might be in the offing. Chris.
