Remember the 45-50 is the dry torque. Perhapds his last job was tightening wheel nuts. David [ quote author=" peppib" source="/post/17818/thread" timestamp="1692767408"]He is coming again this afternoon and no way will I let him torque to 70. Apparently a colleague of his suggested the 70 but I have already told him no Will report after he has been[/quote]

The guy the mobile mechanic was talking to was quoting 70 Newton Meters and not ft/lbs. They are roughly the same Head now tightened down to 50 ft/lbs and the engine just purrs Will take her on the short run to pub on Sunday and if all OK get him back to change the oil Not being able to do things myself is frustrating and expensive š³

Took her out for fuel this morning as I had her booked in for MOT tomorrow. Double whammy - head gasket blew again and I lost the clutch. Suspect seal may have gone and oil got in. Stuck 200 yards from home. AA came after 90 minutes and towed me home. I will store her for winter and decide by Spring what to do. It is expensive paying someone else to do the work ā¹ļø

Hi Dave
Sorry to hear of the problems. I think it is a good idea to store the car now and try and find a mechanic who has some experience with this engine. Maybe there is a local MGB club that can point you in the right direction. It seems odd that the oil seal may have failed as I thought this was replaced not long ago. David

Agreed. I would assume that the head has warped slightly if the gasket has failed so quickly. It can be skimmed flat for usually quite a reasonable price.
Chris.

I have a spare cylinder head which will be fitted as the current one must have warped I thought that oil seal was replaced when clutch was done in 2020, but the symptoms are oil being present. I donāt know where else it could have come from. Car has only covered 2000 miles since new clutch fitted. It certainly will not be going back to that garage. They may have neglected to fit a new seal (I did supply them with one). Difficult thing to check As health deteriorates and I can do even less work I will have to see how I am after winter. It may be that my favourite car which I have owned since 2006 has to move on. Original owner had her from 1969 until 1997, she had 2 more owners between then and 2006 when she came to me. I donāt know anyone with an MGB. I used to own one in the mid 70ās - an MGB GT. Only time I ever got a speeding ticket as rear view not good and a policeman on a motorcycle couldnāt be seen. I took the engine out of that a couple of times as it was so easy and no gearbox attached to add to the weight

It would be a shame if you have to let UMO go, but I understand your predicament as I am unable to do everything I used to as age advances. I think it would be better to sell in running order given the recent increase in crab values so you may wish to get the spare head checked to ensure it is not warped or suffering from any crack which are not uncommon so worth finding somewhere that can pressure test it.

Been pricing up valves, guides, valve springs etc so head can be rebuilt in my lounge over winter. It came off a known good engine, and rebuilding it over months should be achievable for me. Ear ache from Her Ladyship will have to be tolerated š Another alternative would be to buy a refurbished engine and clutch complete so it is just a case of one engine out and another one in. Will see. Mo has been oily ragged to deter any winter rust. She is also under a breathable car cover as dirt whirls around the basement car park and everything gets filthy standing for a long period in there.

I'd echo Dave and say whatever you do with the head - existing or spare - I'd get it checked across the mating surface and across the exhaust side that it's flat and get it pressure tested. Trouble is you're probably already into Ā£150 (certainly down our way) if it needs skimming at that point and for double that you could send it away (I looked at Peter Burgess website) and it comes back with job done and all new valves, guides etc. Also no earache. I completely get the other option of buying a complete engine /gearbox unit and just swapping the whole lot over and Tony Wood, would IMHO be a good starting point to see if he knows the whereabouts of such a thing. All the best Andrew

Thanks Andrew. Moās gearbox came from Tony several years ago and I took the engine out then to fit it. It is remarkable what he can come up with - but sadly not a steering rack which I have been after for years. When I make a decision what I am going to do I will have the spare head checked. Checked and rebuilt elsewhere the was I am now would be a wise decision. I am even worse than I thought now - got Rach a replacement phone and last night it took me 20 minutes just to fit the SIM card as I shake so much!

Dave, I'm sure you have thought of this but if the head gasket has leaked water into any of the cylinders it would be a good idea to drop some oil into the bores before you store the car for the winter.

Thanks Dave. No water ingress (non visible on dipstick and no mayonnaise) Been lucky twice now with that Had the Mercedes pre MOT tested yesterday as it is now my only useable car. Have a list of bushes and brakes to buy which I can get about the quarter of the price garage will charge. Trouble is, unlike Mo, I have no idea what these parts look like and there are variations for some of them. Hmmm ā¦ā¦.

Thanks Andrew Considering at one time I rebuilt a Moggy Traveller from a box of bits, a rolling chassis, 2 engines and loads of new parts to make it close to concourse before selling it to someone in Ireland, all this being useless is so distressing. I even ended up on the floor on Tuesday and couldnāt get up again, even with Rachās help. We had to call a neighbour for extra assistance. Still in great pain from that 4 days later

3 months ago I awoke my spare cylinder head from its slumbers With the aid of my home help (yes, I tell her what to do and she does it) we removed the valves, only deforming the one spring compressor as it was Chinese rubbish and I couldnāt find my faithful tool from 1956 Only having less than an hour on occasional weeks, new exhaust valves and double springs fitted after removing a great deal of rust and polishing the ports
Wednesday we did about an hour stripping the engine in the car. Rocker shaft stuck. Turned out 2 very tight washers were the problem. Sorted now Will see when we have another hour to spare and then do some more She WILL run again. Still thinking about that clutch. Every mechanic I have approached so far has point blank refused. I was rather poorly a few weeks ago and a paramedic attended. Spotting the cylinder head under a coffee table his face lit up. Apparently when not on duty he works at a local garage. He gave me the number, I phoned and was rebuffed with a definite NO Hey Ho. Will sort it somehow Dave
