That's quire a long time ago and maybe it's lost some volatility or there is gumming up in the carb. Can your son not clean the inside of the distributor cap for you to rule that out? An inline filter before the float chamber is worthwhile on cars not used for long periods. David Car was last filled with fuel and had a 100 mile run last September Dave

I am going to introduce Son’s hands to spanners this weekend. It will be a culture shock for him and really unknown if he will be able to use one. His skills are mental and mathematical
If the petrol was off surely it would affect all the cylinders and not just one
I will get the fault sorted - even if it means an extra hour of work for my cleaner. She is very good with spanners!

The electrics to one cylinder may be marginal but I think the more likely cause is damp and tracking inside the distributor cap, working on the principle of checking the easiest first which is why I imagine Chris said wiggle the HT leads.

Good luck with Cleaners and Sons Ltd....how wrong can it go! My approach is even simpler - start the car, get it warm go for a drive see if it clears itself. It's got to be moisture or fouled plug if it was being moved around on the choke. Happened to mine when it was on sale or return at a dealers. I wouldn't delve too deeply! Fingers crossed & all the best. Andrew

Andrew, good advice! An Italian tune up works wonders too.

Thanks for all the tips. I can’t take it for a drive as it just has no power to be able to make progress in city traffic - a hazard and annoyance to other road users. That’s the trouble with living where I do, handy for everything except driving a poorly car Have ordered new plugs but they are taking ages to arrive (Halfrauds) closed some years ago and local accessory places aren’t accessible in a wheelchair. Plan is to get parts together before ‘encouraging’ someone to help. A new rocker cover gasket has arrived so I can check if there is a sticking valve. Yes there are 2 spares in the boot already, but the state of my boot means they are probably knackered
Chris - I have to work short and rest very long. I was working for 30 minutes on Merc door card on Saturday and then slept for 4 hours and wasn’t able to do anything yesterday - Son had to drive me to pub for lunch. He is only here until 12th June when he returns to his Surrey home after being here for 15 months
Andrew - if I wasn’t in the City Centre the car would be driven along country roads to see if the fault would clear.
I will report progress as soon as there is any. It WILL be sorted

Good luck with it all. I don't face the challenges you do but both of my old cars are fighting me every step of the way at the moment and it's massively frustrating. On Bristol just got recon power steering box and pump back in, go for a drive all good but 7 litres of water have magically disappeared and rear diff getting noisy. On Model A every replacement part I get seems to be a one size fits all and needs modifying/machining and I don't have the skills or the tools so it's engineering shops / long suffering mates....Neither car has been properly on the road since January. They'll probably both be sorted just in time for Winter! Cheers for now Andrew

She now runs perfectly with new plugs Old plugs being dispatched to check on the mining rights value. I have never seen such encrusted plugs in 64 years messing with cars Had to show my apprentice which way up the plugs went. Still, he managed

Must add that emissions check last year came in at 12.8 Next job is carb methinks. New needle and possibly jet Son returns to Surrey next Saturday so that will be a job for when he next returns to civilisation
