Dave - at suggestion of Tony Woods I once tried to get hold of Ray House. Several calls and he just didn't answer his phone, something Tony advised may happen. I won't bother with him again, thanks
Andrew - I saw that ad. It is dated 6 months ago. I will contact him when pension day comes around again. Committed to minor bodywork repairs on Merc this month (garage expensive even for minor work now)
Thanks guys
Dave

Eventful trip from Newcastle to Henley on Thames yesterday. Smoke from under bonnet. Stopped at Sheffield services and it was coming from offside of engine. Brake not hot enough so spoke with Chris and he was equally baffled Continued journey and every time I braked I had the smoke and it was getting worse. Stopped for fuel and a van driver ran over to suggest I may be on fire. Reassured him I wasn’t. Then the penny dropped that each time I braked I also depressed the clutch. Yes, it was in the process of burning out. Managed to complete the drive and I am now 250 miles from home and doubtful if there is sufficient bite to get us home. First hill and I am stuck Her Ladyship however thinks there is nothing wrong and insists we travel to our second intended hotel for this evening. There will be ‘difficulties’ from her when we are in the cab of a recovery truck Good news for Snoopy though - the boot is empty apart from my mobility scooter!

Look who's back on the road after 10 months! She safely made the trip home from Henley, smoking well every time the clutch was depressed. New parts ordered then difficult job of finding garage able and willing to fit them (I am just too disabled now, even struggling to hold soap during ablutions) I am enjoying the delights of crabbing again. Been battling for 2 weeks to fit a new choke cable as hands don't really work, but at least it is warm enough to start her without the choke. On my second replacement cable now as managed to mess up the first one. Dave

Yes Tony - northern weather. Got first new cable threaded from dash OK then shook at the wrong moment when trying to thread through the tiny fitting at the carb. One thread unwound, followed by several more and before I knew it, the whole thing was knackered. The second new one is a solid single strand job so can’t fray. All I have to do is thread it through from the dash - and it won’t go through as easily as the twisted one

Mo went for MOT yesterday (as I can no longer get under her, best to have someone checking all is well) Garage is old type and MOT bay is over a pit. Tester was underneath when bottom hose let go and he got a hot bath! Worrying about how he was going to free up the testing bay, I produced a spare hose from the boot of essential things. His face lit up and he fitted it without charge She passed

Good news/bad news/good news! Sounds like you might have found a decent garage at last.
Time to enjoy her before the winter weather sets in properly.
Chris.

Thought I would use her today to drive to pub for lunch. Started, drove out of garage and then dropped to 3 cylinders so around the block and back into garage ☹️☹️ Into Merc and off to be fed. Have no idea how I am going to investigate fault as I really can’t lift a spanner now. May have to educate son in their use before he returns to leafy Surrey in 3 weeks time
As I really now can’t look after her I may have to seriously consider moving her on to someone who can. I have owned her for 15 years ☹️☹️☹️

Can you manage to take the distributor cap off and wipe inside. The most likely cause of misfiring if not run for a while. Maybe you son could help? David Done that already Chris, and sprayed them with WD40
