Well done! It looks new underneath a tribute to Chris' welding. I seem to recall there is a way of tightening the shim in the rack, it was a very common issue on Mk1 cars. David MOT time so got the tester to do these photos underneath to show Chris's work
Of course she passed.
There is an annoying rattle which apparently emanates from within the steering rack and does not affect safety. Tony is trying to source an internal bush for me

Thanks for that info Chris - I will investigate
Dave - any idea how to tighten the shims?? Tony asked a parts restorer about supplying a bush, but apparently it needs a power press to insert

It could well be the pinion preload that needs adjusting which is relatively straight forward here Thanks for that info Chris - I will investigate

Thanks Dave
I know the garage are busy all week next week, so I will get her over the pit the week after so fitter can take a look

Just when I thought Mo was all fixed, yesterday .... clutch judder She has been leaving a bigger than usual oil footprint recently, so most likely oil on the clutch but I will also check for worn engine mounts, and get mechanic to test drive her in case it is just a question of old fogey driver inabilities That clutch has been in for 7 years (I think, maybe 8) (Ah, memories of when I could still actually do something useful with a spanner rather than just cause chaos)

Get your mechanic to check out the engine mountings and the rubber bushes in the damper and stabiliser (under the transmission case). Is there oil coming from the bottom of the bell housing drain hole? Much easier fixes than the alternative. Good luck. David Just when I thought Mo was all fixed, yesterday .... clutch judder

Thanks David,
I can't get under to see where the oil is coming from. Garage put it over a pit rather than up on a lift so snookered for seeing her there as well, but mechanic usually does a decent job (mates rates) except spotting serious rust damage!

Front nearside engine mount is f, er, has failed.
Oil leak was a simple fix - fitter hadn't tightened the bolt in the filter sufficiently when he installed the new element last year.
Whist under, he noticed the head of a sump bolt appeared to be newly sheared. No idea how that happened, but no oil leak. I am trying to remember when I put the thing together if there was a locating pin. Will look it up when I get time

Gratuitous photo of Mo, just because she is actually clean
Had her hand washed by a team of Russians on way home from pub. I must have been in favour today as they blackwalled the tyres
Shim taken out of pinion, and now the rack doesn't rattle, and the steering is much more positive

She's looking rather good there.
Glad to hear about the rack. Got an advisory for "slight play in rack - n/s" in the MoT. Damned if I can find any. Puzzled.
Chris.

Don't you just love Chinese made parts. Fitted a new coil last September. Today it failed just as I arrived at the pub. At the moment I am having to do some work on my wheelchair so 1/4 drive sockets are in the flat. Called orange toolbox (took longer for them to answer phone than it did for mechanic to arrive) and using his tools my ancient spare coil was fitted and away she went. Will now have to look for another coil and hopefully not get a duffer this time

Dynamo replaced with alternator this morning. Everything seems to work, and all my nuts are tight

Everything seems to work, and all my nuts are tight I wondered if I was on the right forum when I read that.

Turns out all my nuts weren't tight. Checking oil this afternoon and top bolt on the alternator was hanging out. Must be a thing with alternators replacing dynamos on crabs
I have found a replacement nut but just don't have the strength to tighten it properly. Hopefully it will last for the 28 mile trip tomorrow, then round to garage to use the mechanic's muscles to finish the job. Mind you, he tightened the one I have just lost
