Thanks Chris. Good to know - rare but not impossibly so. I'll let you know how things go. Paddy

Oh I was kind of hoping that you could say its still possible to get parts.
The car I looked at was a non-runner kimberley. The engine block looks rusty and lots of stuff leaking round the welsh-plugs and head and rocker gasket. What little oil in it was black is a manual. There was no pressure in the clutch. and the brakes seemed jammed on Otherwise plenty of rust
So I'd love to save this car - but I'm not sure I could get parts. Regards Paddy

Hi - Is the morris 2200 engine the same as that used in the Australian Kimberley? Would there be many common parts? Best regards Paddy

Hi Again, many of the cars I've seen have rust at the bottom of the doors. After its cut out and repaired by your favourite method - what stop it coming back and turning the $$$$ new paint job sour? - Other than never washing or getting caught in the rain.

Hi All So I'm part way through removing the engine to give access to the gearbox. In the BW35TA manual (down loaded from the Austin NSW Club site) it indicates "Remove the self-lock nuts 8" Now is that all there is to get the shafts off or is there something more to do to get access? Or is there any other tricks or traps I need to be aware of? Drive shaft.pdf (92.77 KB) Thanks for the support! Paddy

Just a bit of an update. (Auto gearbox slipping into 1 & 2) I'd been kind of convinced that the only thing to do was to swap over to a manual gearbox. I kept looking for a suitable donor car but nothing appeared (within 500km). A couple of other options were a good autobox (easier but rarer).
I've sussed out another few shops that are able to work on the transmission. And talking with my mate was persuaded to consider attempting something myself. - If I'm going to replace the box why not have a try to replace the clutches(?)
The Eighteenhundred has the full service manual for the gearbox. And the BL manual is very comprehensive on the autobox. Looking through it made me realise that the L modes and the D modes are indeed reliant on some different components.
Thus it was time for a test run around the reservoir. And yes! Starting in L till about 15MPH and then moving to D seems to work. I've got to do some more extended tests. But even starting at the lights on the steep hills it just seemed to pull away nicely.
There's more to do - if it is as simple as a single worn component then I should be able to identify. On the other-hand the flow through the hydraulic circuits might only need a nudge to work - or not work.
Still I'm stoke to pull out onto the main road without the wobble-shuffles!

Hi Mike - that kind of vacuum thing did happen to me once in my old Renault 12 on the M5 just after the M42 junction (maybe its the road.) The car stopped; power died off - like running out of petrol. The very nice AA man came along opened the petrol cap and it quickly started. It never happened again and I don't know if he wiped dirt (rust bucket) out of the way. I'm not sure if it was a known issue with those cars or if it was just on his list to check. It would be interesting to know if you cleaned up around there and if the breather tube can collapse or shift(?)

Greetings!
I understand that there is very little commonality between Mk1 and Mk2 cars but how about the engine and transmission (auto or manual)?
Are they interchangeable or different too?
Cheers
Paddy

Thanks Andrew, Wrecker offered a manual for $375. I need to talk to my mechanic pal but I.m estimating a solid days work. Of course with something like that you never know the condition. The car at the Austin parts supply was running and could be driven but was a bit much for the project.
Yep was another record 46oC the other week - has cooled to a passable 37 today. I miss the cold and the rain - never thought I'd say that. Cheers Paddy

Thanks Andrew, I'm in Adelaide so that fella is just up the road. He did do some work on the car earlier - is very helpful. He'd couldn't recommend repairing the transmission due to cost. Suggested swapping out to a manual box but its still costly. Even had a possible donor car. Weighing up my options - getting back to the gardening while I think. All British Day is up soon - so there might be some sources to tap there.
Cheers Paddy

there's this - with a sun roof! link1Or this - that's only up the road link2Or this auto interstate link3The guy didn't really want to get into it. And said that in reality its not just slipping going into second but is also slipping into first too. Meaning that is not a basic as the servo.
