Chris
If you would rather do an alternator conversion, I have one you can have FOC (acquired for my Moggy and never fitted. I have another one allocated for the crab if I ever get around to fitting it)

Facet pump? Noisy little blighters, even if you hang them on rubbers. Chris. Oh yes. It was hung on rubbers but even so the noise was intolerable on a long journey. I did look at one similar to that fitted to my Moggy (no, not the originalSU one) but decided the mechanical one had lasted over 40 years (well, a replacement mechanical one was fitted a couple of years go) so that should see out my time driving. Mind you, she was parked in direct sunshine whilst in pub for lunch today (no alcohol consumed) and took a few moments cranking to get the petrol flowing again Dave

Years ago when these were current, my car used to be serviced at a garage owned by a rally driver. His wedge was his support vehicle and had been modified accordingly. It was also the car he loaned me whilst mine was in for any work. Thing was scarily fast but behaved on corners (usually) Completely different from driving a crab though, although having said that my crab is not rally prepared

Ah, the unique feeling after altering pipework, supplying power and turning the ignition on only to see the precious fuel persisting from some unknown pump orifice and onto the garage floor. Another pump arrives, is fitted and then found to be so noisy all the pipework alterations are removed and the original mechanical pump reinstated. After 4 years the electric one still lurks somewhere in the boot, unloved, amongst sundry spares, tools, and other junk I have in there.

Well done. An age thing for me I'm afraid. Would you like a bed by the window? Chris. Think the men in white coats are coming shortly to lock me in a darkened room for my own (and everyone else's) safety! She purred her way to and from pub yesterday, despite visiting son asking if it would break down (cheek - it was this car that moved him safely from civilisation in Newcastle to the ultra posh and heady atmosphere of Weybridge in Surrey). Next job is ball joints (car, not mine) Dave

Damned clever these Landcrabs. Green wire had disconnected itself from the back of the fuel gauge and wrapped itself neatly around a bunch of wires high up under the dash. Another wire which normally sits harmlessly doing nothing had also managed to insert itself into a connector causing the short. All now repaired and back together, and I only managed to lose 1 of the small screws which must be a record for me recently. Chris - I realised after I did the post about the earth wire that I had been looking at the sender unit and not the gauge on the wiring diagram. An age thing for me I'm afraid.

Managed to fit new terminal in fuse box (thanks Chris), have repaired the short and everything except the fuel gauge now works fine. The wire which fits on the left terminal of the gauge has been pulled off and I just cannot find it amongst the miriad of wires under the dash. According to the wiring diagram that is just an earth wire. Made and fitted another earth but gauge still doesn't work. Overdone things a bit so in agony. I will have couple of days rest then start the search for the missing wire again. It must be there somewhere

Thanks Chris, pm sent
What SHOULD be through A3/A4 and what actually IS through there are 2 entirely different things. I do have ignition warning light, flashers, and engine runs OK. I don't have fuel gauge, radio and haven't tried wipers and screenwash.
I did notice a small pool in the drivers footwell so obviously a screenwash pipe had come off and they have stuffed a great hand in amongst all the wires to reattach it and in doing so have dislodged something. I will look once this arctic wind has stopped howling through the covered car park.
As for the oil leak, I suspected the tappet covers some time ago and changed the cork gaskets for rubber ones. Will do a recheck. I was standing looking at the exhaust manifold. Last year when I was really unwell I had a local garage repair the exhaust, which is why she now has a Corsa silencer. Looking at the manifold, the flange is OUTSIDE of the clamp so how on earth it hasn't fallen off or isn't blowing like mad I don't know. I will have to find the stamina from somewhere to fix that as well.

Car been for MOT and passed - so that is the good news. Some advisories though - both outer cills show very slight signs of corrosion, both sides lower ball joints have minimal amount of play and there is an oil leak. I have hunted all over for that thing without success so guess it will have to be found and cured by next year.
Main thing, however, is that she has developed an electrical short. Wasn't there when it went in, and neither was the fuse box broken. As soon as a fuse is put in the central position sparks fly and it blows said fuse. This is also the fitting that somehow the garage have managed to break - one of the brass tabs at the top. Not well enough to get down there with multi meter at the moment but any advice on where to start? The garage lad (not the tester who didn't show his face when I was leaving) said the car was a pass, but when they tried the horn again the fuse blew. I find that hard to believe as it was working fine when I tried it earlier

Well done Chris. After all your work if that was the only problem it shows what a cracking job you have done.
When I first moved to Newcastle 10 years ago I didn't know any garages (good or otherwise) around here so still used to take my cars to the tester I had used for years - some 25 miles each way. Took the 'crab down the motorway and parked it in the service area. Tester then pulled it on to the ramps and ......... a brake pipe sheared depositing fluid all over his immaculate testing area. That could have happened out on the motorway so I suppose i count myself lucky.
Roll on Tuesday pm

Sorry to hear of your troubles luckily nothing serious. Maybe a roll of gaffer tape would be a useful addition to your boot kit Regards David Already there Dave, but even with it retaining the recovered bits in place she still wouldn't start.
Poor Rach can hardly move this morning. She had a grand mal seizure last Wednesday so was already stiff without the pushing.
