Looks about the same as a 270 cam which is what I ended up with in my S. A great cam - I didn't notice any particular drop off in bottom end torque, rock steady idle and really gets up and goes over 1500 rpm. It was all over by 5500 rpm but little point taking it that high as max HP was around 5000 rpm from memory. Really good for the road.

I used the Tommy method for changing the cam with the engine in situ without any problems. I also had the lobes worn at one end of cam issue (it was a new Piper cam) which I put down to not following the break in procedure they suggest - run engine at 2500 when first fired up with new cam for 20 mins, don't let it idle etc.

Not a massive surprise and once it's done it's another thing you've sorted for good. I was paying for someone to do mine and it was in much worse condition than yours under the skin...so every new discovery was even more painful!! It only went in to have some rally spots fitted! Onward and upward. Cheers Andrew

And did you like what you saw when it was out of the way?

Many drill small hole in thermostat to reduce likelihood of cavitation, if it was me I'd do that when putting new thermostat then water pump then turn attention to rad - getting that properly cleaned out and pressure tested and then perhaps think of upgrading to more modern fan or two slightly smaller ones. Pao is now on shopping list! Along with Derby Bentley, Chapron DS and '57 Chevy!

For what it's worth completely agree with check and adjust approach to bearings - that's probably all it needs. Again with the magnetic sump plug I remember the first couple of oil changes were as you say "alarming" but it soon went from porcupine to hedgehog to what one would expect. On the 1800 the oil change interval is 3000 miles - like the MBG - but few stick to that I'd imagine. Bet it's already feeling like a different car. Very taken with the little Nissan - what a cutie! What are they like to drive? Cheers Andrew

Definitely the right decision and taking it out that way should be easy I reckon...I know as well as you do where this will lead though...might as well do the baulk rings...clutch, head skim/rebuild etc! And the additional shocks/mini upgrade is a useful and inexpensive mod. If you go that way I found the cheap mini shocks was the way to go - I swapped them for Konis and the stronger rebound was a bit too much. In the rally mods bit in the technical section there's lots of helpful tips on things you can seam weld and double skin whilst you've got access! On mine I did renew every last bit of the front suspension - even the bits that seemed fine and it made a massive difference to the driving experience. Have postponed Honda Express investment you'll all be relieved to learn.

I was looking forward to you getting the sand blaster out again ... and thinking when it's all done you'll probably invest in a carcoon or similar! I've been using that waxoyl in an aerosol to (hopefully) good effect - it's certainly easy to use and that encourages regular top ups. Nothing much to report on my cars - am just driving them. Hopefully taking Speedster to Devon for some side by side beach racing (salt water and sand - great!) in September but apart from that just local car runs/charity events. Bought house in March and decided to do what I always wanted to do to car...take it back to shell, everything out (wiring, plumbing, doors, roof etc)and start again. I'm the unskilled labour and project manager - I can't say it's fun but it's satisfying some days and the parts are easy to get! Thinking of mini project and quite fancy the old Honda Express - if only for comedy value of 17 stone bloke on one! Keep up the good work! Cheers Andrew

Car looks great - I had an 1800S but always fancied a 2.2 - am sorry you've got a few immediate issues to sort but rot is the only real cause for despair on these cars so fingers crossed you're Ok on that front. Wind noise - yes it was a minor issue on mine on one door - lots of fiddling around, new trim and so on made it better but in the end I just lived with it. It was only really apparent at very high speeds 80+ by the time I'd finished. Good luck with it all. Cheers Andrew

No basis in logic but why not leave it in 2nd when you switch it off when it's up in the air and once it's back on the deck start it up and go for a drive and see what happens! Am trying to wrack my brains - remember reading something on here or in the magazine about some tolerances in the gearbox needed to be spot on when rebuilding....will have a look.

What a result on underseal, vinyl and headlining - congratulations. The correct terminology bit is not gender related - just seems to me every industry/trade/profession has their own vocabulary to accurately describe what they're talking about (and simultaneously to make it difficult for anyone else to understand). I'm still picking it up but WhatsApp has made life a lot easier - it's brilliant to be able to send a picture and say "that's the bit I need". Cheers for now Andrew

Hi Louise Car looks great in lots of ways but I can see that you've got some work to do on the interior. Looking at the photos the seals round the windows look new (ish) which is good ..once you get the headlining sorted it's pretty straight forward the only bit I'd struggle with is the headlining (if you decide to replace) but you are hopefully more dextrous than me. In some of the photos the headlining looks ok just dirty/stained so I'd try to clean it (if you haven't already) - there seem to be a variety of different approaches to this on the internet. Multi purpose foam cleaners appear to be the weapon of choice with a steam cleaner with an upholstery attachment as last resort. Sounds soppy but might be worth getting a car detailer / valeter round to have a look - the good ones have all sorts of weird and wonderful chemicals and tricks of the trade in their armoury. Good luck Andrew
