Morning Nick Thanks for the fascinating update - love the attention to detail and ingeniousness! I've just finished a house rebuild and move and am now back on the cars - dealing with a couple of issues that I've been putting off - trying to improve the steering box on the Model A and the gear selection of the Bristol (it's an auto but shifting it manually is not as positive as I'd like). Both a bit of a fools errand as Bristol fine if you leave it in drive and steering box in Model A was good enough to pass MOT. So now with Spring around the corner I find myself yet and again with two cars - neither of which I can drive....
Looking forward to next update.
All the best Andrew

Wow - looks stunning - and you haven't hung around! Congrats and good luck with getting car ready for show season....you'll have to trailer it everywhere in a covered wagon as you won't want to get it dirty/risk a stone chip!

I'd try easiest first - just moving the wiper arms a spline or two the other way. Mine was never perfect there was always a small amount of slop so I just adjusted till I got a happy-ish medium.

Impressive stuff! You'd get on well with the chap I met on the Bristol forum who is converting from a steering box to electrically assisted rack and pinion! I'm doing zero with cars at mo as we're heading towards finishing line on house build (got garage carpeted!!) and trying to declutter a 7 bed house containing 30 years of memories and assorted crap and distill it into what will fit into a 3 bed terrace! Did have interesting time a few weeks back when selling a spare rear windscreen. Gent turned up in his 410 (same model as mine) and we swapped cars and had a drive in each other's. Fascinating to compare the two - mine's the one on the right - the camera does flatter them a bit. It's a bit like one of the "spot the difference" puzzles ! bristol2 by andrew atherton, on Flickr

en-gb.facebook.com/electricpowersteering/Here's the chap I used - makes the kits that Burtons and many others resell - approachable but as pretty much one man band is very busy but he'd be worth a chat. If you go on his facebook page and go back to July 2017 you can see my car and what the install looks like.

I had mine done as a drive in drive out arrangement and it was about £1200- £1400 but he also sorted out some other issues. They used a corsa unit with a separate rheostat and it was exactly as you suggest. From memory the chap did away with the flexible connection at the bottom and used a UJ - with no noticeable change in noise, vibration or harshness. I found it a brilliant improvement. Cheers Andrew

After the final Y gets my vote - leave it in, easy and quick to screw into in the future - straightforward to tape wires out of way so you can actually go for proper drive when time comes with it all hooked up and see what's happening. Being nosy had a quick look and there's a couple of rolling roads in Bundaberg but they do seem more diesel orientated. That said, doing it the way you're suggesting is going to get you where you want to be and will be more fun than just handing it over to someone else! Cheers Andrew

That's some work rate ! Fingers crossed that's the limit on the welding - as I'm sure you know, these cars seem to be particularly good at hiding the tin worm.... Cheers Andrew

Only other thing I'd suggest when it's going back together is replace the top arm inner bushes no matter what the ones that are on there look like. It transformed the driving experience and is a pig of a job to do otherwise. I can almost guarantee what's on there has been on there since birth and doing the now will sort you out for another 50 years. I got mine from Tony Wood. Cheers Andrew

Well that's a result - well done. Can't remember what else was on your to do list but you seem to be rattling though it. No doubt Nick will be along soon to remind us that 27 - 30 degrees is a warmish winters day where he now lives!!!

Morning! Only thing that occurred to me whilst it's so accessible is just checking the can thing for the crankcase breather (looks like mini exhaust silencer underneath the carbs) isn't full of gunk - mine was! Cheers Andrew

I can't remember re the clutch plate but Tony Wood will know, if someone on here doesn't help soon. On the needle front I gave up with following the book and let the tuner chap sort it out as once on the rolling road he tried all sorts, filing some of them until he was happy! Waiting patiently for next welding instalment . Cheers Andrew

This is the thing I used - went with the "Tune" version which was very good - and had two maps - one for excellent fuel and one for rubbish fuel! 123ignition.com/It's a good device and can certainly help you get the best out of the engine but it's quite an investment and you really need a rolling road session to set it up properly. That's when it gets complicated...trying to find someone who is great with SU carbs and modern technology and owns a rolling road......
