My 18/85 was supplied on the 27th August 1971 (one of the first on the new "K" registration) by SMAC Group in Southend on Sea to a Mr Oliver Abrehart of Leigh-on-Sea. Mr Abrehart treasured his Wolseley, always kept it garaged and polished and used it for several long journeys over the years, in 1974 he took it to Wetherby in Yorkshire on holiday, then onto a campsite in Edinburgh. His grandson who was a mechanic and MOT tester, always looked after the car for him and it's had quite an easy life by the sound of it. Sadly in December 2009 Mr Abrehart died at the age of 89 and his grandson advertised the car via Ebay. It was only a few miles away from me so I went to have a look and was amazed by the condition. It didn't sell first time round, but it was relisted several months later and I won it! The paint was very flat as it hadn't been polished for several years and had been sitting idle in the garage for at least a year, but it ran well enough and is scrubbing up like new! Unfortunately the PAS rack is leaking so a new one is required (£350 from Earlpart!) and either the PAS pump or dynamo is rumbling loudly so they'll need replacing soon. And some welding needs doing around the headlight on the drivers side fron wing, luckily the other side was replaced 25 years ago after a small accident so that's good and solid. Undersealed from new, this car shouldn't need any structural welding - which will be a nice change from my Austin Cambridge!

Looking great Richard! Look forward to seeing it in the flesh. Will follow your PAS rack replacement with interest as I fear that's what I'll have to do with Reckless.

I'll let you know how I get on.
Looks like it will be an expensive business to sort out all the faults this crab has, although at least there's no welding I suppose!

Ah, right; I thought it was a lot lower. Hardly mega miles for a near 40 year old car... We found out today it was the dynamo that was making the rumbling noise, the PAS pump seems ok So a non-PAS Lucas C40 dynamo has been substituted for the time being.

Hardly mega miles for a near 40 year old car... No, but enough for wear to be more of a factor than failure.

That's true, although the autobox level hasn't gone down since I checked it last so we should be able to get away with a recon dynamo and rack - when funds allow! At the moment at least it's roadworthy.

we should be able to get away with a recon dynamo and rack As discussed in another thread you may get away with just new seals. Dynamos usually last a long time; perhaps it just needs a new bearing?

Possibly, I've had this same problem on a Morris Minor, basically the dynamo makes a very loud rumbling noise and there is loads of play at the fan pulley. I've always just replaced them before but this one is unique to the PAS models and is £100 exchange from Earlpart, so...

£100 exchange from Earlpart, so... Try Tony Wood; he might have a second hand one, if you don't want to replace bearing.

Just in case you do not know. Autoglym Restorer polish is fab. Finer and easier to use than Tcut. When I want a super finish I 'Clay' the car. I said CLAY ;D Oh Merry Xmas & HNY

Thanks, Merry Christmas to you too W1800! The reason I'm using T-cut is because a few weeks ago when I was out in my A35 an old boy came up to the window and asked me if I wanted the contents of his garage as he'd given up driving and had no need for any of it anymore. Among the contents were six bottles of T-cut so I've been using that. Can't resist a bargain Haven't done much on the 'Crab recently, yesterday I changed the air filter as the old one was absolutely filthy and it actually seems to run better now! I won a NOS one on Ebay for 99p, bargain! Tomorrow we're taking it to North Essex on a Chrimbo run, probably the longest run it's done for 20 years!
