It must be very late there, perhaps your brain needs sleep . What are the symptoms; maybe the shorting of the windings to act as a brake when you switch off isn't working so they overshoot. If they overshoot too much they won't switch off unless you turn off the ignition. Single or two speed? David I have been busy trying to solve the reason that the wipers won't park. Brain thoroughly addled.... Chris.

Yup, 14W 2 speed motor. Parking switch is working - just as well as it's the screw on one, which doesn't seem to be an available spare. However, the wiring is the issue (99.99% sure). THE BOOK gives a wiring layout for the switch with the terminals numbered 1-2-5-7. Switch in the car has its terminals numbered 1-2-4-5.
The issues are that the wipers simply stop when turned off (ie, don't park) and there is no difference between low and high speed action.
Easiest solution might be if some kind person could slip their rocker switch forward and see what wires are located where and let me know.
Chris.

Hi Chris! Sounds like a wiring issue. I'll have a look, but can't say when.

Superstar - just what the doctor ordered! Thanks very much. This is one of those problems which is really stupidly simple - just not obvious. I'll have a go tomorrow and see where we go.
Cheers,
Chris.

I have resolved the wipers. It WAS the parking switch, which was a shame, as it's the aforementioned screw-on one which seems to be made of the finest quality unobtainium. Bought a "rebuilt" 14W motor from Moss (£47.05 - quite reasonable). Fitted the gear and crank, shot it all back into the car and found matters exactly the same.... Having got my head sort of round the logic of the parking switch, I managed to prove to myself that the brand new (?) one was faulty. However, because this is the clip-on one which you can still buy replacements for, I fixed it instead. After that, figuring out the wiring at the switch was easy. I feel a letter to Moss coming on though..... Chris.

Got the Red Dog back last Friday in exchange for GLE. Thought I'd pop up to York for the 'Crab club night on Tuesday evening. Got as far as the Dyneley Arms (about 2 miles) and the charging light came on. I thought I heard a distinct "ping!", but I may have imagined that. Anyway, it's not flickering, it's full on bright, so no charge at all. I will have to investigate this weekend.

My friend's white dog doesn't want to go further than the nearest pub according to his wife on the odd occasions she takes the dog out for a walk, must be a Yorkshire thing. Did you actually risk driving to the meeting or have a drink instead ; It's quite a long journey without a charge. David Got the Red Dog back last Friday ... Got as far as the Dyneley Arms (about 2 miles) and the charging light came on. Chris.

Nah - turned round and went home. It would have been starting to get dark by the time I'd have been coming back, so decided not to chance it.

The dynamo is jiggered. Had a bit of time this afternoo, so after proving that it wasn't charging, I pulled it off and stripped it. The bush bearing has collapsed and the armature has moved sideways and run against the brush holders. Commutator is badly damaged. Several segments appear to be "smeared" together and the running surface is very rough. You can see the collapsed bush in the third picture and the shiny metal on the brush holder where the commutator made contact. New bush is soaking in oil and tomorrow I'll have to build another dynamo. Chris.

Chris
If you would rather do an alternator conversion, I have one you can have FOC (acquired for my Moggy and never fitted. I have another one allocated for the crab if I ever get around to fitting it)

Yay! We have volts again. After that little panic when the charging light didn't go out.... This was follwed by today's "You pillock" moment. Dynamo assembled from pile of random bits on the shelves, +vE car - you have to polarise it. Then the charging light went out.
Dave, that's a very kind offer and much appreciated. I'm trying to keep this one to pretty much original spec, so I'm going to stick with the dynamo.

Bagged a new wiper switch from the bay of evil things. It has a nice shiny faux chrome surround, so had to be fitted, especially as on of the tags on the existing switch was only soldered into place. No problem at all. However.... MrsP, Twin 1 and foster daughter were greatly amused by the box. Can't imagine why. Chris.

Day one of two weeks without family or modern cars, so work stuff in the back of the Red Dog. Left last call, loud pop, severe inclination to the right, fluid under the front of the car. Bum.
