You'd have hoped so. Unfortunately, the replacement is probably just as bad. Still, you've got to try. Chopped out the rotten inner, drilled off the spot welds through the flange and removed the inner section. After that, I made the mistake and chopped off the flange across the turn of the front of the bonnet. And a grotty bit in the corner. Made up some sections to replace the inner structure. Doubled the front edge over to be plug welded to by the flange to be attached to the front edge. It won't work because by removing the rotten flange on the outer skin, the front is no longer sat at the correct angle. It has sprung forward. As a consequence, the inner panels are set too far forward. Furthermore, removing the rotten corners of the front edge allowed me to misalign the inner panels. It's body work day at college tomorrow, so I have put the original bonnet in the bus along with some steel and the chrome trim piece. Time to seek some expert advice. Chris.

What a headache. As I mentioned some while ago some of the Mk111 cars never looked quite right at the front of the bonnet as though they were under tension with small indentations. I wonder if this was anything to do with it. Good luck David Y It's body work day at college tomorrow, so I have put the original bonnet in the bus along with some steel and the chrome trim piece. Reading about your battle with the doors and now the bonnet makes me even more sad that the approx 16 doors and 5 bonnets, all virtually rust free, together with just about any part you can mention, were allowed to go from a club near here to the scrap man. Seems I contacted the wrong person in the Landcrab club in an attempt to save them. Still, one lives, learns, and in this case, regrets
Hope the professional help manages to rescue something

Hope the professional help manages to rescue something Unfortunate, Mike. As for the professional help, fellow student Paul and myself spent Wednesday fabricating this fella: This is actually surprisingly complex, as it involved shrinking and stretching the panel in all three planes to get a vaguely accurate shape. To be honest our tutor did quite involved in this, as control of the shrinking machine is surprisingly sensitive, which as a pair of novices, we hadn't got. Having made that, I have now sourced another bonnet which is allegedly almost rust free. As a quick solution, I'll go with it. More bonnet chopping and welding can come later....... Chris.

All electrics now functional in some form....... All that's now required is a flasher unit and the job is done.
Happy day.

Yup, nearly there. Mind you, it shows where my skill set lies. 14 months welding, electrics restored in 6½ hours.......

All sorts of little bits and pieces done today. Fitted new rubbers to the wipers. Welded bottom bracket for headlamp surround. Got wiring into clips. Spent far too long trying to connect the speedo cable collet behind the dash. Slam panel and uprights attached, bonnet catch back on. Blown some primer over exposed bits of metal. Quite an enjoyable day really. Chris.

Must be a great feeling when you get to that stage of the project, where you can see fast changes _b

Yup, down to details. Getting quite excited. Mike from the Resto course was Dahn Sarf over the weekend and collected damask bonnet number three for me. This one has some dents, but only one small rust hole in the front edge. I think I can sort this one quite quickly.
The list is now:
Tyres - all need to be replaced. Bonnet - get it looking respectable. Brakes - do a proper bleed. Handbrake - set both sides properly. Bumpers - refit front and rear, bearing in mind that I forgot to drill holes for the front offside irons. Could be intersting. Interior - bolt the seats back in.
That should let me get a test. Maybe.
Chris.

Cheers Andrew - I don't think the budget will run to it at the moment, but I do have the remains of the originals which I will remake at some point in aluminium. Possibly a project fpr next winter.
Dave - I just need to bang a couple of holes through the inner wing for the irons to align to. Trouble is, I'll have to do it from the outside in, as I forgot to do it before I dropped the engine back in. Doh!
Made a couple of small welded repairs on bonnet no. 3 this afternoon, so an outbreak of filler to follow to sort out a couple of dents which I can't get from the back and that'll be ready to go on.
Chris.
