That big bolt can be a pain. I assume you have tried soaking it overnight in penetrating oil as there is usually electrolytic corrosion present. I have had trouble in the past but with gentle persuasion it has come eventually. Just the usual tricks, trying to tighten a little first then backing off, multiple (5 minutes)fast not too hard taps on the head of the bolt and where the shaft passes through to allow the penetrating oil to penetrate, I have never had to resort to heat but it could be a last resort.
Good luck
David

Got it, someone hid a nut inside a pocket next to the lower bearing.

Got down to the clutch, the t.o. bearing is toast, what do you do for new ones?

I think anyone who has ever stripped one of these engines down has been caught out by the bolt down the hole!
The bronze bush in the end of the crank? 12H 1630 from Moss or any MGB sepcialist over your side of the pond. Good practice is to soak it in a light machine oil for 24 hours before fitting.
I'm going to move these posts over to your rebuild thread, as we're having a chat in Snoopy's rebuild thread.
Chris.

okay, thanks. Where does a person get the gaskets that are only used on the Landcrab motor, like the clutch cover, engine plate to idler assembly , diff etc?
I think I'm going to put a header on my Crab, any suggestions?

Just to add to Chris' comments on the bronze bush in the end of the crank. You may need to ream it so that it doesn't bind on the end of the clutch shaft or changing gear will be a problem. I'm not sure if the MGB bushes are identical on their inner diameters. If you fancy making your own gaskets there are templates to size up on Tony C's website available to members. Here Did you get a response to the crb? Chris is our expert and member Ken in Australia (pm me for details). Both are testing roller bearings. Alternatively you will need to contact Tony Wood to see if he has stock of the carbon ones. He may also have gasket sets. Regards David

I actually found a release bearing in Canada but I would really like to have something better than the friction style. Yes, I can make gaskets, but my time is to valuable to sit around cutting out dolls. I've made them at the race track several times and a good way to make them is to lay them on the part and tap them edges with a lite hammer. I then use a leather punch for the bolt holes. What is being done about the oil leak on the shifter cables? A couple of years ago I used a shrink fit electrical tubing on the casing to keep it from leaking out, but the oil still eventually makes its way back to the shifter. How do I contact Tony Wood

Tony Wood's details are on the LOCI website LOCI contactsHis email address is on a link there, I prefer not to put it on the open part of this forum. As far as whether there is anything better than the carbon crbs is concerned is open to debate. As the arm goes through an arc it means the roller bearing is not parallel to the clutch throughout its travel. This has led to early failures through overheating and it is in constant contact. Chris is experimenting with this by fitting an adjuster (see his thread) and roller bearing and Ken is using a self centring bearing. Both are under test. The carbon CRB is fine if everything else is sound including the clutch hydraulics. Tony Wood is aware of some poor quality carbon crbs so may possibly be able to advise on the one you have from Canada. Here is the thread relating to Chris' prototype bearing here. Ken's CRB modifications with photos hereThe leaks from the cables - refer to Tony C's website LOCA magazines cover this in detail but I don't think there's a permanent solution afaik. regards David

Charly, I've updated the thread about the clutch release bearing. There should be enough info there now for you have a crack at fabricating one if you like the idea. HERE. Chris.

Wow! Drove my Landcrab around Saturday with the new motor and the clutch working much better (it had been jerry-rigged before) and what a pleasure it is to drive. Much more comfortable and easier to drive than the Mini. Also a little better than the Austin America. I have a photobucket for it here. I'll add some more pictures of it later.
