A thing of great beauty. I trust that you ate your dinner off it prior to assembly? And, can I have a go when it's finished? Please.......

Can't afford to eat anymore having now paid the engineers and James says you can only have a go if you are a very good penguin. Can you spot the subtle difference between the original and rebuilt head.

Much swearing and bruised knuckles has seen the engine beaten back into place. It has fought all the way. First it was stuck between the slam panel and servo. Then it got stuck on the displaces tube. After that it the cross member would not locate and as a final fight the drive shafts would not locate. After a threat from a big bar and a hammer it finally behaved and stayed where it should be.

Great progress. I usually find mine behaves when I curse it. Shame that doesn't work when trying to get Madam to do anything!

[hot chocolate]Oh, you sexy thing....[/hot chocolate] Looking really very good. Getting excited yet? Chris. Yes. I'm looking forward to seeing what it drives like. it going to be under fuelled to start with as I'm going to run it on the single carb until the engine is run in.

It's in. All the bits are bolted on. Oil cooler plumbed in and fixed in place. Got exited. Turned the key. Nothing happened. I suppose I should have known better than it start and behave it's self straight away. After some fettling it was tried again and it's not gong to run properly. Plugs out out and put on the Arger to warm through. Engine turned over to lubricate and prime everything. Hot air gun down the plug holes to warm things through Plugs back in. Turn key and the beast comes to life. (Sort of) It's running but the fan is catching the shroud and the water pump seems to have developed a nasty noise.

Had a run in the car today for about thirty miles.kept the speed down and the revs low but it seemed to run well. On returning home there seems to be a bad fuel smell and moisture at the bottom of the carb. I think a carb rebuild is going to be in order. Has anyone on here taken this on.

I've done a carb rebuild, though I donno if I did the best of jobs, to be honest.
I ordered a kit from SU/Burlen. Had a bit of trouble as my carb had the waxstat on the jet, which they no longer make (they're not very good to begin with, apparently), So I had to order a new jet, but otherwise I think it went ok.
One of the tricky parts is centering the needle into the jet.

I know Snoopy managed to pick up the bits this morning, as I was his shopping advisor down the phone! Tomorrow is the day, so I hope it all goes to plan.
Best wishes.
Chris.

I rebuilt a HS6 for a Volvo a few months ago. Other than the linkages, virtually identical to the Mk1/11 Crab. I found a few short videos from Moss quite informative as it's been a few years since I rebuilt a SU from scratch. Jet replacementFloat adjustmentFloat issuesMy observations: (i) It can be a little tricky to seat the O ring correctly in the float chamber when replacing the jet (see video). (ii) On my carb the jet locking nut would not undo without risk of damage. A few hours in the freezer followed by hot water and a few nights soaking in penetrating oil and it freed up. (iii) I found that oiling the thread of the jet locking nut allowed the needle to be centred easily as you need to tighten it just enough to allow centring then tighten. (iv) The nylon tube connecting the jet to the float had hardened and split and this can be a cause of leaks as it flexes as you use the choke. (v) There was a surprsing amount of wear on the float needle tip given the fact that the carb had apparently only been used for very few years as borne out by the overall condition. This can lead to flooding. All parts available from Burlen Hope this helps regards David Had a run in the car today for about thirty miles.kept the speed down and the revs low but it seemed to run well. On returning home there seems to be a bad fuel smell and moisture at the bottom of the carb. I think a carb rebuild is going to be in order. Has anyone on here taken this on.

Thanks for the links. Looks like a fiddly job.
I also seem seem to have developed a running on problem. Is this timing ?
