Good job Indy. would of assumed the speedo cable would of read off the wheels? You're thinking motorbike! The speedo in most cars is driven off the gearbox.

Not really that slow! A BMC 1800 broke seven International Class 'E' (1500cc-2000cc) at Monza, Italy in September 1967, in seven days and seven nights of continuous motoring. This BMC 1800 travelled 15,589.76 miles at an average speed of 92.80 mph and set the following records: 1. 4 Days at 93.90 mph - 9,012.53 miles. 2. 5 Days at 93.42 mph - 11, 210.26 miles. 3. 6 Days at 93.24 mph - 13,426.95 miles. 4. 7 Days at 92.80 mph - 15,589.76 miles. 5. 15,000 kilometres at 92.64 mph. 6. 20,000 kilometres at 93.38 mph. 7. 25,000 kilometres at 92.78 mph. lol well I'm sure I'm not doing 90mph!
As for speedo cable, does it have to be a crab one? or could an MGB one work?

Hmmm after driving the car a few times, it just doesn't quite feel the same for some reason. Also sometimes I can here a flat *thud thud thud* noise when going along with the gas on? Quite keen to get all the steering/wheel bearing issues sorted, she would be perfect to drive then! Even tempted to take it to my mechanic for an overhual in that regard, but of course much more keen to try myself and save a few pennies Cheers, -Andrew

New speedo cable (thanks to the NZ Wolseley club) and brake pads, safety first _b Do I need to remove the entire dash to get at the speedo? -Andrew

(Sorry, no pics!)
Greased up the speedo cable, she works a treat now, but will need to compare the speed with a GPS, but seems to be correct.
Replaced the brake pads and changed the brake fluid, brakes just need to be bedded in, but should be good.
Can still hear some thuds from time to time, gonna do some full lock turns today and see if the CVs are making any noise.
Sometimes when I drive her, it feels like i'm fighting against her, she wants to go one way and myself another. Also I have shaking and wobbling in the steering wheel, new rack needed?
If no luck soon I'll bite the bullet and take her into my mechanic early next year and get him to service the steering.
It's not dangerous, but somewhat annoying, and I know she can be a great handling car if the little niggles are taken care of smile.gif

Well can't seem to hear clicking noises, which is good.
The bad though is that she doesn't seem to like running nicely in the rain. Stalled at the lights, and was very sluggish from the shops.
I really need to get here tuned up. K&N filter is on the way. Will take the carb apart for a clean, check timing, replace plugs and check mixture.

You might consider blanking off part of the grille, Indy. With the open grille on the 18/85, the distributor is fully exposed to the weather, so the rain goes straight in. I have a sheet of black corrugated plastic blanking off the left hand side of the grille. It is more or less invisible when you look at at the car, but does shield the distributor from the weather. I have a rubber "snood" fitted over the coil connections as well.
I've posted something about knocks and clonks in the other place for you.
Chris.

Could be many things. But if it happens after you have driven a few miles, the CV joint could be dry. (It gets hot and partially seizes making the steering fight you. Now if that is the case it could be dangerous, I advise you to get it checked. The steering shake is probably nothing to do with the rack but a wheel / tyre out of balance, a ball joint with play, tie rod rubbers etc or the CV joint if you are fighting it to change direction. regards David (Sorry, no pics!) Cheers for that David. I shall inspect the age of the tyres and also for cracks. If too old and damaged I shall replace.
As for the CV joint, I'm not 100% certain, but had not considered the scenario. I might give my mechanic a buzz soon or have to wait till after my Christmas break. I'll hold off going on any open road or M-way driving till then.
