Hi All, Still scraping and flushing the grime (protective coating?) off the engine. Somewhere underneath it all I can see what looks like red paint on the head, the remnants of a metallic kind of turquoise on the block and the rocker cover was once black. My workshop manual has the engine all black (on the front cover) though I've seen the same publication with the metallic greenish engine? Some of the early minis appear to have an army green block and cover - and some of the MG 1800 engines look smart in red. Thoughts? Paddy

MOWOG Green is the colour of many of the engines. If you look at Paul's 1800 rebuild thread on this forum Here you'll be able to see what a good one looks like. Many MGs seem to be red and quite a few are in black. Not sure what they originally came out of the factory with. Nick

Yup, Bronze Green up to about 69/70, black from then on on UK cars. Red was for MGs. Don't have much of a clue what Zetland got up to.

I think in NZ we had black engines towards the engine on Princess' etc, but I imagine that's because they were all made from knock-down kits.
The spare engine I have for the 'crab is black. One in the car is green (under it's protective oil coating lol).

Thanks guys, That seems to solve it. Black would be much easier and about right for this car (1969). There isn't much green left - the path by the carburetor is the most. Although the booster is in that same bronze green. And the red may be just some remnant of a primer or something. Paul's 1800 engine looks awesome. Cheers Paddy

Hi Andrew When you say about the Protective layer of oil - do you ever bother to clean it all off? The engine here is not only has 5mm coating of grunge but most of it is that red clay - from out the back of beyond. I'm officially halfway through and just revealing precious words like Lucas Australia. The plan is to degrease and touch up the rust and brush paint the bay and block - but there's a lot of grease.
