Hi All, I've been working through some basic stuff under the car and in the engine bay. I wanted to take off the sump guard to clean away 50 years of grime. The bolts at the front are easy enough to take off. But how do the back to bolts come off? The bolt shafts point inward through the lugs on the guard - so even if I take the nuts out the bolts are still holding it on. Do I need to push the bolts outwards and what about those suspension components also on the bolts? Regards - and sorry if I've missed the obvious. Paddy

Those look like the long bolts through the bottom of the suspension housing. If you undo the nuts, they should push back through and allow you to drop the sump guard. The bolts do freeze in the alloy and can be an absolute s@d to push back through. The suspension component is the lower engine steady bar and stops fore and aft movement of the engine, so you may be doing a bit of levering when it's time to reassemble it.
Chris.

Thanks Chris, Good to know I'm heading the right way. Paddy Subaru village green is pretty close to amw prefixed engines U.K.imports = about 1965, or Wolseley imports, do not know about Morris. the light metallic green is as far as I know a BMC Australia concoction used on a lot of BMC stuff up until 1968, the next one for Aus cars is a dark metallic silver ( not black as I believe was the princess B series wedge motor ) the metallic when aged looks black but take that little panel from the corner of your boot, the one where your tail lights are and you have your colour, it comes up as a Jaguar colour

Hi again Kenny, very interesting - can't wait till morning to go have a look! My car is 1969. After repeated cleans I think I can see silvery paint under black paint. It's going to be too cold for several weeks yet to paint anything (her indoors wouldn't be too impressed by parts in the kitchen!) The inlet manifold and for some reason the brake booster show most of that metallic green paint but I think it's been added on later (paint over the edge of tubes etc.) Its interesting digging up the past - in the end I didn't take the sump guard off - just cleaned down below with the hose.
