I have problems with the Wolseley Forum. I use Three 4G for my internet access. Wolseley Forum can't handle this; I'll not go into the techie details. I can if you ask.
Making this the LOCI site would only require a brief message in the Mag, to tell existing members, and a one-liner change to the LOCI website to tell newbies.
I think it would be a good idea to archive all the helpful advice I and others have received in the Wolseley Forum, which is now invisible to me.
What think you?

Hello Richard, welcome aboard. I did wonder if you'd pop in at some point. Now then, you're opening a bit of a can of worms with your question, and raising some significant issues about the demographic of 'Crab owners. A chap known as RichardH started this forum on the 9th of December 2010. He had a 'Crab for a while and felt that there was no-one to talk to. As a consequence, he started this free forum. It has some interest and a small but steady flow of posts, which has gradually built up into a very comprehensive library of technical and restoration threads covering almost all aspects of 'Crab ownership. It's something which the membership has built over a few years and I'm rather proud of that and them. The trouble is, due to the nature of 'Crab owners, relatively few of the world-wide band of owners actually use the internet and many, even with postions of responsibility, don't use email. As a consequence, many of the older members just don't post anything, anywhere. In the fullness of time, their knowledge will be lost. I'm 56, and a bit of a whippersnapper by LOCI standards. I've owned my second 'Crab for 11 years now, and I'm still rather a "blow-in". LOCI aren't daft, they've been aware of this forum from its inception. From a club point of view, it's not perfect as I don't care if you're a LOCI member or not. If you're interested in the cars, you're more than welcome to join in. By using the facilities offered on the Wolseley Forum, they can have a private club area for club business and activities, which is absolultely fair enough, without the management hassles of owning, managing and maintaining the forum themselves. The Wolseley Forum is due a huge upgrade within the next three months, which will resolve many of the issues which have gradually arisen. However, it still doesn't solve the basic problem. 'Crab owners don't do the internet. You will have noticed on the Wolseley Forum that the posters you have corresponded with are Mark, me, Ahctog (Barry), NickRS and occasionally Mrs Nishka. That's it, for five years of work. On here, we have some 180 members, 73 of whom have never posted and the core group who actually keep the forum "alive" is probably about 12. One member is known to have died, so he has a valid excuse for not posting, although I miss his (often very funny) input greatly. As for the rest? I don't know. There are a large number of readers and visitors every day according to my stat logs, so there is interest, yet nobody says anything. There's even a non-member in Rugby who spends two hours a day on here, everyday, and doesn't join. What are you supposed to do? I can see no point in LOCI making this their home, as nothing will really change. Mark is "Foursquare" on here and does an excellent job of keeping the LOCI area up to date. I suppose the ultimate statement of where things have got to is that LOCA, the Oz club has closed down. There are a number of groups on the internet where you can do 'Crabby stuff: The Oz google group hasn't had a post in over a month. Most of the rest are read only. Your other choice is the group on Facebook, which, like here, ticks over gently. Personally, I consider Facebook to be a disorganised shambles. You couldn't run a restoration blog on there and the technical posts would just slip further and further down the list until they're effectively lost. So, you are very welcome to join in here, I'd love to see pics of your car coming back together and you will get some support, encouragement, help and even praise for your efforts. There just won't be hundreds though. Cheers, Chris.

Chris has summed it up pretty well, a lot of members of the LOCI just don't seem to use the net, which is a shame as they could share a wealth of knowledge with 'younger' members, such as myself.
I just can't think of a way to encourage them to jump on board. They clearly love their cars (like we all do here), but just don't seem fussed about sharing the knowledge etc.
One of the things I fell in love with when I started with the classic cars is the 'scene', talking to people who share the passion with you. I'm hoping we can keep the momentum going and get a few more members on board, not to sound too pessimistic, but if people feel they can't get access to the knowledge to fix the cars, they might just give up and get something else.

Chris, you've highlighted one of the most significant characteristics of Austin 1800 ownership. A lot of people like to read the news, but very few want to make the news. With the demise of the Australian club, I thought I would carry on in a different way with the 1800 Australia web site. Having done this for about three years now, I am amazed that Daryl Stephens last 20 years as editor of the old LOCA newsletter with one every month. Now that I have produced only 12 newsletters (one every quarter), I can count the total number of contributors on three fingers, yet I have 150 or so signed up as readers!
I think the Landcrab proboards forum is excellent as it is and should not be associated with a particular club. It makes it more open and available to anyone who wants to either enjoy the excellent posts, or contribute if they want to. The forum layout is quite good, and it is fairly easy to find and read past articles, plus the never ending rust work in your part of the world is a source of constant amazement and inspiration for us in Australia. Keep up the good work all of you.
Tony

When I bought my crab 9 years ago I looked online and found the LOCI website. I was booked in to Lichfield 'Cars in the Park' so emailed an official who's Email address was prominently featured on the website, to ask about access to the club stand. No reply. Feeling disgruntled we turned up to the show to place the crab elsehere on the field, having first pitched our tent. We were suddenly surrounded by crab owners who uprooted the tent and moved it to 'their' area, whilst we were taken into Reg's caravan and plied with tea and biscuits. It was a great weekend with very sociable, knowedgable folk - and my crab actually won best Morris (OK there were only 2 at the show!) Armed with that knowledge, when I needed to ask something else, I Emailed one of the sociable members. No reply, nothing. Pick up the phone and speak and they greet you like long lost buddies and are full of advice which, if not written down and shared, will be lost to future generations
I found this forum through the 'signature' of one of our leading lights on another forum and nowadays rarely visit the LOCI one. LOCI members are great - but just will not embrace the advantages of the internet, and still mainly use landlines (having had my landline number for 10 years, I still don't have a clue what it is!)
This is the friendly forum to come to for/share any information in the ongoing battle to keep our cars on the road

I started posting a reply to the many helpful suggestions, went away (kids!) and when I came back the reply was gone. Maybe there's a timeout.
In summary: - the Wolseley Forum can't handle IPv6. I use Three 4G which uses IPv6. - I'd like to know of a mechanic who can replace the gasket on my autobox. It leaks. A mechanic who has non-metric tools. It's an engine-out job. I don't have an engine hoist. - the twins prefer the Wolseley 18/85 over the Rolls Royces. - I didn't say: I have an adblocker, Adlock Plus, I think this is now integrated into Firefox. I'll support your forum by buying you a pint when we meet at a rally.

Chris, you describe yourself as a 'blow in'. I've only ever heard this to mean a mainlander who has moved to the Isle of Man. An vyil tu ag Mannanish?
I hope I've spelled that correctly. I only know the Ulster spelling, An bhfuil tĂș ag Mannainis? Is it yourself that is Manx?

I can only concur with what Penguin and the other long-standing Forum members have posted on this thread.
We have a lot of communications channels open to us to keep in touch - so let's use the lot!
There's still a lot to be said for picking up the phone and actually talking.
Another stat for the pile, more than 90% of the membership prefer to receive a hard copy of the club magazine.
A sizeable cast of 'Crabs is indeed a rare sight these days, although were are hopeful for a big turnout at the National in July for the Golden Jubilee of the Morris 1800. If you can help swell the ranks, please get there.
Cheers,
Mark

- the Wolseley Forum can't handle IPv6. I use Three 4G which uses IPv6. The high tech bit of posting onto the forum is handled by the Proboards support people. They seem to be very efficient and quick off the mark when odd problems arise. - I'd like to know of a mechanic who can replace the gasket on my autobox. It leaks. A mechanic who has non-metric tools. It's an engine-out job. I don't have an engine hoist. Shouldn't be difficult to arrange. Is the car mobile as is? Where abouts are you? Have you sorted a conversion gasket set yet? - the twins prefer the Wolseley 18/85 over the Rolls Royces. My twins prefer the 'Crabs to the modern family vehicles. Not sure what they'd make of Rolls Royces. - I didn't say: I have an adblocker, Adlock Plus, I think this is now integrated into Firefox. Shouldn't make much difference on here. Mine used to cause this site to generate a message saying "Please consider turning off you ad blocker". It doesn't seem to do it now. That said, this is one of the least advertised-on boards available from the various free forum providers. I'll support your forum by buying you a pint when we meet at a rally. Free beer always gratefully received! What is really required though is content. It's what people like to see. As for the "blow-in" comment, I'm a Cornishman who's lived in Yorkshire for far too long now. I still await my "Honorary Yorkshireman" certificate, as, after 28 years I'm still "nowt but a blow in, lad". Chris.

From my 13 years in Yorkshire, I seem to recall that your family had to have lived there for three generations before you were let into Headingley as a spectator, and as for playing -- Domesday Book entry I believe. David - I still await my "Honorary Yorkshireman" certificate, as, after 28 years I'm still "nowt but a blow in, lad". Chris.

It moves. I had the MoT bent and welded to my specification. It's not converted yet to run on unleaded, so I keep the revs down and add tetraethyl lead to the tank. I'm in Grantham, Lincolnshire. While it gets me from A to B, there's quite a lot of things I want to fix about it before I'd start thinking about showing it at rallies. If I am going to have a mechanic work on it, I really want it to be someone who has not only the right tools but the right mental approach to working on a classic car. The alternative is to buy an engine hoist and do the job myself. This would take a lot longer, and I'm not entirely sure of my competence. So many mechanics these days only know how to plug a computer into the ECU, read off the diagnostics, and replace a module. I need someone who understands about cars, not computers. - the twins prefer the Wolseley 18/85 over the Rolls Royces. My twins prefer the 'Crabs to the modern family vehicles. Not sure what they'd make of Rolls Royces. Have I stumbled upon the Landcrab-owning parent-of-twins forum? Now that would be an exclusive club! If it's any consolation, the Rolls Royce Enthusiasts' Club is the same as LOCI only more so. You don't see many faces that don't bear the marks of 80 years or more. The Club bulletin is only available on paper, it's the sort of glossy presentation that you expect to see in dentist's waiting rooms. I'm not a member any more, I didn't really fit in with the social side. I mean, I'm not Sir or Lord MidnightBlue. I own two, a RHD one here in England and a LHD one on Vancouver Island BC. Spirit I and Spirit II respectively. John 'twojags' Prescott was castigated for owning two Jaguars: I'm a member of the Labour Party and I own two Rolls Royces! They're not actually that expensive to buy or own, they're heavy on petrol, but insurance is cheap, parts are cheap, and they last for ever. My twins are identical twin girls. They take after their mother, who is a Carib Indian, of the Wayuu tribe, so they look very much South American Indian, but they're Canadians from Victoria BC. They prefer the 18/85 because they're not restrained and can see out of the windows. The RR isn't especially distinguished for visibility from the back seats. The Wayuu are one of the smallest human races, only pygmies, #Khoi!San and Andaman Islanders are smaller. They have successively defeated the Spanish Empire, the army of Grand Colombia, and the Colombian Army; they're one of the two New World nations who have never been defeated (the other are the Seminoles of Florida). Therefore, at the age of 5, they can stand and walk about in the back of the 18/85. The RRs have seat belts and kiddie seats and they have to be strapped down, by law. They don't like this. Enough ramble from me. MidnightBlue
