Hi all!
I'm interested in advice on removing rust from inside the petrol tank. The white one has quite a lot of rust debris at the bottom of the tank. I can see it when looking down the hole for the sender unit. The debris is loose, bottom of the tank is shiny, which can be seen when moving the debris around with a flat screwdriver. I drained the tank once, while tank still on car, flushed it, but still lots of debris left.
I have a filter in the hose between the mechanical fuel pump and the carb, and I've changed a lot of them. Rust colour soon occurs after fitting a new filter, and they are filled with fine rust debris and missing can happen, if they're not changed (very) regularly. I always keep a spare filter in the boot.. Some debris also finds its way through the filter and into the float bowl bottom.
I've decided to have this sorted when I've got some time. The tank has to come off, of course. I'm thinking of filling some diesel and a chain into it and shake it. Some people use vinegear and hot water. Any suggestions? I'm not using tank sealer, as I don't know how the gauze filter inside the tank wil cope with this. Have anyone got experience here?
I've got two other tanks, but not too keen on using any. One has a small hole on it but looks fine inside. That is, what I see inside it. The other is in very good condition outside. Been rust treated. However, it seems to have been sealed inside. No sign of rust or anything. I'm anxious to use it, as the filter down inside the tank seems to have been sealed too, and most likely this sealer does not like ethanol, which the 95 petrol has some of.
So any advice on what I should do?
Regards, Tommy
