c Some time ago I had major work done on my Crab a complete respray and new sills [which I provided] I chose a Company advertising in Practical Classics- several months and several thousand pound later the car was returned. I then rebuilt the car ready for MOT sadly although the underneath looked nice and black last weekend I was checking and the o/s sill near the front looked flaky! When digging the pictures above show what I found- no new sill fitted. Please anyone using a restorer don't do what I did by not visiting regularly and inspecting, it was a very expensive mistake for me! Take care Mike

If you've got itemised receipts I'd be contacting Trading Standards as a matter of some little urgency. That's really not good enough.
Chris.

Check for itemised receipts or a description of works carried out. Can you prove that they were given new cills to fit and is it itemised that they have invoiced to carry out this work. If you can you have them. I would be tempted to give them the opportunity to rectify the problem before going to trading standards.

All valid points above. I suppose these people feel able to sleep at night knowing they've put someone back in a car with a compromised structure - so glad you haven't had to test that theory.
The lesson for the rest of us is to have a look at the work done before the paint and / or underseal goes on the car.
thanks for sharing Mike

Mike I am very sorry to hear of your problem. My advice would be to go back to the company first of all and ask them to put in writing what they propose to do about rectifying their failing. You will need to determine whether they are in fact capable of fitting new sills to the 1800. It has to be done with care to prevent the body twisting once the old ones are removed. This can be achieved in several ways including the welding of temporary braces across the door openings. You will need the company to set out in detail out how they propose to carry out the repair. There is a real danger they could simply weld the new sills over the top given their history with your car. As others have mentioned you will need photos of all stages of the work. If you have detailed receipts and written acknowledgement that you provided new sills (and where are they now!) then you are in a relatively strong position as this constitutes both fraud and theft. The legal process can, however, be long and convoluted and varies across the country. The first thing to do is to contact your local Citizens Advice Office. Read their guidance here Reporting to Trading StandardsNote a criminal prosecution by Trading Standards or the police does not guarantee you getting a refund - it is aimed primarily at taking action ahainst the offender. It may be that the Small Claims Court (civil) procedure may be far quicker and more effective in getting money back. Again the Citizens Advice is best able to assess your situation. I wish you the best of luck; please keep us informed. regards David

As you will see from my restoration - I was in a different position where I bought a mis-described car from a dealer. I choose not to go legal (been there before, only the solicitors seem to win) and regularly pestered the dealer until we reached a cash compromise - less than I hoped /more than he wanted to give. On the face of it yours seems pretty cut and dried so hopefully it'll be sorted quickly-ish. Trouble is as you know, inner and outer sills are a lot of work and that could be just the start of it once you get in there. If it were me I'd get as much cash as possible have a drink and a think and re-assess. Unpleasant business, really feel for you. Cheers Andrew
