You may be aware that there is an alternative to water / antifreeze being advertised as a water free coolant. Its claimed advantages are that it prevents corrosion, has a much higher boiling point, gives better economy and lasts many years. If you look at Peter Burgess' website Burgess he does not recommend anything other than water /antifreeze and notes: "In our opinion using coolants other than water with antifreeze/corrosion inhibitor addition as recommended in the original workshop manual can allow the engine to run too hot and cause problems such as sticking valves and piston damage. We offer no warranty on our engines and heads if waterless coolants are used. Water is the best liquid for transferring heat." Other, such as Jay Leno are using it their cars. Youtube LenoI do know it's a lot more expensive than water / antifreeze. David

Would appreciate some advice.....what's the best coolant to use in my crab? Ideally I need to buy online as there's only Halfords within 50 miles of home. Had a small radiator leak & now need to refill with coolant before the long Scottish winter. Did some reading - OAT is no good as it eats solder & some other soft metals. Not sure about IAT. Needless to say, didn't get much sense out of the young chap at Halfords! E-bay descriptions are usually just "red" or "blue" - not too helpful either with so many specs now around for modern cars.

Blue!* Ethylene glycol is the one for our cars. Halfords only sell pre-mixed and they can't tell you the mix ratio, so best avoided. I think I used stuff from Wilco Motosave. They have a web site for online shopping - www.wilcodirect.co.uk/ - but I find it a complete nightmare to try and navigate! Chris. *Waits for inevitable colour comments.

Just run of the mill green anti-freeze and anti-boil, mixed with demineralised water at 1 to 3 or 1 to 2, in my car. It's common knowledge that green coolant makes the car go faster than blue coolant, but red coolant is the fastest. -Andrew

That assumes David is not already nuts. I know that Toyota here strongly advise you NOT to mix coolant on the grounds of incompatability. So have we decided which is the coolest colour? David Noooo - David will go nuts! Chris.
