Experiments with polyurethane rubber continue. This one's a lot more complicated as the mould is "double sided" as opposed to flat bottomed. First few shots are shown below. The one with the metal strip exposed is a (the?) new original. The others use a length of wire cast in, so it has the stiffness, but hopefuly will avoid the rust. Weather strips by Penguin 45, on Flickr Weather strips by Penguin 45, on Flickr These are all close, but don't qualify for the Cuban combustible smoking device. Definition is excellent where it matters, but there are air inclusions. These appear at random different places along the "wiper" edge, so it's not the mould at fault. Well, it is, as the channel is very thin. The problem is the viscosity of the mix when pouring. I have sourced some new material which promises a much lower viscosity and, providing the pour can be controlled, will eliminate the problem. C.

Even so, they look very close indeed. Superb work once again Chris.

I see you are not trying to make easy shapes any more Chris nice job! Hopefully the less viscose stuff does the job.

We've been away in Cornwall for a while. Mother's 90th birthday, so family gathering. Just for fun their conservatory has been completely refurbished at the same time by yours truly and MrsP. Never again.... We made the six hour trip down into a ten hour one by taking the scenic route through Wales to collect some nice red MkII Austin seats from Andy Bellfield. Very kind of him indeed. Interesting project in his workshop as well.
Took the seats out of WifeBusette this morning and went to put them away in the workshop. Upon opening the door, I found a large hole smashed through the rear wall. The hasps on the front doors have been forced and lots of stuff isn't there. The alarm system has been smashed off the wall and the batteries for the solar have been ripped out. So, they've smashed their way in at the back 'cos that's unsighted, then the motion sensors got them and the alarm's gone off. Smashed it to get silence before forcing the front doors to load stuff into a vehicle. Probaby at 3 o'clock in the morning. Anyway, my rollalong tool cabinet has gone (so that's all my hand tools, sockets, spanners etc), the air tools, socket sets, tap and die sets and, strangely, all the plastic boxes of nuts, bolts, washers, clips, connectors. Oh, and the electrical box. That's quite upset me as it has been part of my working life for 30 years. Now I can't even mend a broken wire. They've had the soldering iron as well.
A rough check and add up suggests that about £2500 worth of stuff has gone, plus whatever it costs to get the wall rebuilt and the alarm and batteries replaced. I simply can't afford it. The plan was to get Eugenie looking smart and sell her on. She is actually in the garage being worked on and I was planning a bit of a reveal next month when I was rather further forward. Can't do anything to her now. I suppose I could sell the Red Dog. She's smart enough to be worth a decent sum, which would fund getting started again. Trouble is, I like her more than Eugenie!
So, not in a good place right now and seriously considering giving up the hobby. Sell them both and be done with it. My health isn't brilliant and I really, really don't need the hassle.

Hi Chris
I really don't know what to say other than I am truly so sorry. I suffered a loss of items that had been part of my life since a teenager in the past and know how it hurts but nothing of this magnitude, you must be devastated. All I can suggest is to try and rebuild slowly if you can. I personally don't think it is a good idea to give up a hobby once you have retired, I would have been lost without my interests.

That is a tragedy for you Chris. Some people have no conscience
Don’t give up. I have been forced into it and it is not a nice situation Dave

How rubbish is that - really feel for you. I can completely understand a possible desire to liquidate and regroup before deciding how to move forward - and perhaps that trailer tent is beckoning?! That said can't see you without a project that involves metal and welding and invention somehow! Take care Andrew

Chris, I'm so sorry to hear that your workshop has been broken into, but even more so that all your hand tools have gone. I know this is of no consolation but I had my car and all my tools stolen so I do know how you must feel. The bastards that did this need their bollocks chopped off and shoved where the sun doesn't shine. Hopefully you'll be able to get started again sooner rather than later, don't let the bastards grind you down. All the best Steve

Cheers everybody. You're all quite right - you can't let them win. Hole in the wall by Penguin 45, on Flickr Hole in the wall by Penguin 45, on Flickr Hole in the wall by Penguin 45, on Flickr Obviously not the world's largest burglar... Plywood sheet screwed to the wall as a temporary measure, as the builder who was coming round today as it was an emergency is now coming tomorrow. There's also a baulk of timber braced against Eugenies front bumper. I've let the back tyres down, so she's currently the worlds largest paperweight. Not the cleverest thing I've ever done in retrospect, as, whilst I have a large compressor, my tyre inflator has been nicked. Bggr. Onwards and upwards. Chris.

I can only think of expletives to discribe these retards! Keep going mate.
It looks like the wall was cut with a grinder then bashed. Very noisy and quite a bit of work! It would appear that they were sure you had some gear to make it worth while and were not around to catch them. Trouble is even monitored alarms and cctv is no help for some types!
Hopefully the d-heads will get picked up! Sometimes worth visiting local pawn shops if the gear is easy to recognise.

Well, the wall is a wall again. I've bought a bare minimum of decent tools. Not good tools, but not the cheapest either. Hopefully as they progressively wear out I can replace them with better ones.
Plans are afoot to make the workshop even more secure. Not saying anything in public.....
Anyway, I did a car job. Gosh, there's a car in this thread somewhere! One of my local scooter repairees flagged me down and said the indicator wasn't working. Checked, and he meant the offside repeater. Lens off, yes. Lamp out, no. Penetrating oil, length of rubber hose, wiggle wiggle wiggle and eventually it came out. Buffed off the rust, metered it and it was fine. Lamp holder looks nasty. Pokey pokey with a (new) file didn't do it, then the lamp holder disappeared into the wing. Fitted wing liners last summer, didn't I?. Remove headlamp. Spire clip at the top for holding the surround did a very passable impression of a pingfukkit and shot off down the street, never to be seen again. Box with spire clips in nicked in burglary, of course. Found one in my old work tool bag. Remove and clean lamp holder. No worky. Remove spring tube lamp holder fits into and clean that. Do it all again with a wire brush in the pillar drill. Reassemble and finally we have the flashing light of indication.
That's an hour I won't see again, but, really, I enjoyed it.

I can sense you are happy to get your hands dirty again even if was "only" to sort out an indicator. While I think it unlikely that your photos on the forum were linked to the thefts it may be a good idea for members not to make the location easy to identify. I have no idea what bots can trawl for nowadays but a pm discussion with another member a while back led to some emails with links to items discussed - coincidence, maybe, maybe not.

Last year I was talking on mobile phone to friend about something. Later that day, and for several days after, I had adverts online for that very product. Big brother listening??
