Thanks Chris. Yes agreed, lots of masking off. I save the paper from the Amazon deliveries as if you unscrunch it and roll it up it does a good job. Proper recycling.

It's like any job - bit of planning, bit of patience and it'll be right. VOF707J by Penguin 45, on Flickr Spent this morning flatting and compounding. Buff it up after lunch and see what we've got. Started getting rust off the grille. It's stainless, apart from the bottom rail, which is plated steel. If I can get a decent finish on it I might get the clearcoat out. C.

Attacked grille with an abrasive sponge, scrunched up ali foil and good old Autosol. Certainly cleared the rust and staining, but not the pitting. Two coats of clear coat it was then. That should stop it recurring. VOF707J by Penguin 45, on Flickr VOF707J by Penguin 45, on Flickr Number plate plinth has had it. VOF707J by Penguin 45, on Flickr Front coming back together. VOF707J by Penguin 45, on Flickr Front number plate. Interesting - pressed ali plate with a die-cut mask. Anyone know what this type is called or who the maker was? I suspect that it's the original fitment from 1970. Chris.

Weird, never seen one like that. Original ones on mine were horrible plastic raised lettering . Put black and silver ones on. Guess it depended on the dealer, but seems very complicated.

Had a thought, what about mounting the stencil on Perspex with some lights behind it. That would please the fuzz.

Thanks, Nick. Curiously enough, I put the number plate pic up on the forum where the old duffers hang out. Apparently this is the second iteration of a Bluemells plate, which was originally made in perspex. Got my ROStyles back from the blasters today. He's a very nice man and even more reasonable than the one I used to use in Bradford, especially where £5 notes are concerned. VOF707J by Penguin 45, on Flickr Phwoar. Look at that! These were formally the beaching gear on HMS Trafalgar, so were very, very rusty. Snoopy's been coveting them for years. VOF707J by Penguin 45, on Flickr That was bare metal in the first pic, so better get on with it before they flash rust. Heavy duty black paint around the inside. VOF707J by Penguin 45, on Flickr Etch primer, primer and two coats of wheel silver later and the fronts are looking good. VOF707J by Penguin 45, on Flickr Pretty pleased so far. There is surface pitting and it can stay. It fits with the "10 year old well loved car" look which I think I can achieve (Rather than the "50 year old not loved at all" look. Get your retaliation in first.). Next is the fiddly bit - the quadrants (Quindrants? There are five of them.) need to be painted black, so that's twenty lots of masking up to be done, or paint them by hand. MrsP has refused point blank..... Finally, they'll need to be lacquered. Pretty pleased so far. Chris.

Hey, Indy. How are you doing? VOF707J by Penguin 45, on Flickr Use enough clamps and the mask'll glue down flat. VOF707J by Penguin 45, on Flickr Not as perfect as I'd wanted, but it'll do. New plinth. Nice to see Snoopy again yesterday. We had a look at the paintwork with a view to how to polish it up properly. Apparently a quick wipe over with Turtle Wax is not polishing! News to me. We decided that the nearside wing top was just not good enough, so I've got started re-doing that. VOF707J by Penguin 45, on Flickr C.

VOF707J by Penguin 45, on Flickr After primer and paint. VOF707J by Penguin 45, on Flickr Flatted, compounded and polished. With Turtle Wax. See what the Polishing God says tomorrow. I drove the car briefly on Friday and there is a strange noise coming from the nearside front driveshaft/hub area. Only under load and acceleration. We'll pull it apart tomorrow and find out what's going on. C.

Today was.... interesting. Mark and I dismantled the n/s suspension and drive shaft. Stripped, cleaned and re-greased everything. Fitted new sliding joint boot, re-packed CV joint, replaced a couple of dust boots. Drilled out and re-tapped a broken dust shield bolt in the caliper and re-assembled everything exactly back to specification. Nothing specific found apart from dirt ingress. Put the car back together. Drove round the block. Started off well enough, went over a large pot hole and as soon as I accelerated away, the noise was back..... grrr.
Well. We're two fairly bright people, we're both 'Crab owners and we both work on our cars, so we are familiar with most of the vagaries, but we really were at something of a loss. We could take some satisfaction that the n/s suspension, brake and drive were fully functional and ready for a few more years use. Was the engine moving excessively? Brakes on hard, revs up, let the clutch up. Engine's rocking a bit. Try it a bit more vigorously. Noise! Sparks! Fan catching on the shroud! Hot engine! Bggr. Fix it during the week.
