Thanks, Nick. It does make sense, honest! Holes in bonnet. These are exactly 50mm apart, thus forming an equilateral triangle. Back of the badge. This is the one which was on the original (rotten) bonnet. The lower two pins are 59mm apart. The distance to the top pin is 48mm. If I sit the top pin in the top hole, we get that measurement. I think I need to move the badge up a little and drill three new holes, thus hiding the existing ones. I think.... Underside in primer. Chris.

The distance you show here on mine is 20mm and the badge is the same where the bezel is offset. Perhaps it is the same as yours after all. Nick

Still haven't solved it! However, plenty of flatting, stoppering and more flatting has allowed me to get the high-build primer on. I'll flat that back tomorrow. Chris.

Third coat applied and left overnight. Today, being the hottest day of the year so far, was spent flatting, compounding and polishing. I think I have sweated off a few pounds at least. Pleased with that. Just the problem of fitting it to solve now. Chris.

First problem to solve was fitting the bonnet striker. Compress spring with a couple of TyRaps, job done in seconds. There you go. Dosen't look bad at all. Chris.

But only at the front....... Did the service today. Somewhat disturbing. 6,000 mile air filter - definitely due changing. Apart from that, there was the usual struggle getting the new seals into the oil filter housing and setting the timing with the new points. Did you know I had a problem with timing? I did it absolutely to the letter of THE BOOK, using a tacho function on one of my test meters and the strobe lamp. Car ran like an absolute nail. Several advances and test runs later, I had successfully set the timing. Getting better at it! Chris.

Hmm - have you been adding iron filings to make the oil pressure look good?? As you say, disturbing.
With the paint, only the scuttle panel, roof, boot and 4 doors to go - finished by the weekend then!

Do I see an engine strip down coming, that is some serious swarf. At least worth taking out the strainer and clearing out the sludge to see just how bad it is. Are there any horrible noises (from the car?). Sorry to see that David But only at the front....... Did the service today. Somewhat disturbing. Car ran like an absolute nail. Chris.

Doesn't look too horrendous to me - perhaps slightly more than one would expect! Mine looks a bit like that sometimes - it's doing its job - pity those that haven't gone for a magnetic plug. Or perhaps ignorance is bliss! Cheers A

She runs very nicely indeed. I don't know how to get the strainer out. Is this a job for one of they mechanic types? I'm going to need one fairly soon as there is a minor head gasket issue to be dealt with.
Chris.

I've never seen one that bad even after a recent rebuild, but that may have been more due to a weak magnet? I think your engine suffers more than most spending it's time at high rpm so I would expect you may notice more wear? regards David Doesn't look too horrendous to me - perhaps slightly more than one would expect! Removing the strainer is straight forward see section A3 in the w/s manual for the standard transmission. You need to take off the speedo drive, other than that just nuts and bolts. Should be a regular service item really every couole of years, but rarely done in my experience. After I did my first one it went on the to do list. They can be really sludged up and even restrict the flow to the oil pump in extreme cases. David She runs very nicely indeed. I don't know how to get the strainer out. Good point David - my timelines are fuzzy - and thank you for your diplomacy in response to my post. Of course mine looked like that when it was munching its way through the cam and as I mentioned above, even then it wasn't quite as dramatic as the picture! That said these engines are tough old units and will continue to run happily with lord knows what going on within. As suggested, I'd be inclined to clean out the strainer and change the oil more frequently - if it's like that again after 500 miles then you've got some interesting choices to consider.
