I recall watching rallies in the 70s where the Saab 99 Turbos were spectacular at night with the brake disks glowing cherry red. I did wonder at the time how the piston seals survived this treatment. David It's cooked the dust cover, but isn't leaking. Coukdn't see it until I pulled the pads. It shows that both calipers were locked on. Unlikely that two previously working calipers were seized. Chris.

Gratuitous brake line shots. Quite pleased with them. Nice and straight, tidy bends. Caliper stripped, cleaned with new seals and dust covers. These had stainless steel pistons when I rebuit them the first time - you can see how the visible one has discoloured. Whilst I was in there, I replaced the bumps stops. This is a little ongoing experiment, as they are unobtainable. I did the other side a while back and they seeem to be holding up all right, so took the opportunity to do the off side. You might recognise one as fitted to the Mini; the other is a proprietry buffer with a screw thread for the top stop. The top stop uses a screw-on box, so hole drilled and buffer fitted. The screws sheared off the mounting plate for the bottom on (As has every one I have ever tried to undo!), so drill new hole and fit well lubricated stainless self-tapper. Job done. And, we now appear to have working brakes with servo assistance, so I'm quite pleased with that. A ten mile run round our local country lanes show no trace of the brakes binding. Engine idle dropped quite markedly once it had warmed through, so presumably we had an air leak previously. Overall, pretty happy with that. Chris.

Little 60 mile run out up north of Harrogate today, all along the back roads, so the brakes saw plenty of use. Nothing adverse to report, in fact the pads have bedded down somewhat and the brakes are actually pleasant to use. Hooray.

Thanks, it's all still working. Except..... A Range Rover drew up alongside at the lights at Horsforth, dropped his window and told me the brake lights weren't working. "Thanks for telling me" I said, whilst thinking "obllocks". Got home (used the side lights to give some lights to the rear) and had a peek under the dashboard. The small spring and washer on the carpet should have given me a clue - the 47 year old switch had disintegrated. Down to Moss at Charlestown - £3.40 later, problem solved.
What is it about brakes on this car? Grrr.
Chris.

Exhaust started blowing at the manifold joint. Poking about revealed that the clamp on the lower bracket had disappeared, which explains the little metallicy noise I heard when driving earlier. New clamp, bit of assembly paste and silence was restored.
Brake light switch proved to be rubbish. Thread was very badly moulded, then it started sticking before the "on" position. Built the innards into the old switch housing and that now works. Old stock - need to find old Lucas stock.
Yesterday saw a pre-holiday check over. Points and timing set, rocker clearances set, carb set and idle tweaked and the plugs cleaned and gapped. All done to the book specs and she's running a treat.

Down in Cornwall for a week. Only one moment of excitement - the throttle return spring broke on the M5. Quite quick for a moment or two... Five minute fix.

I had that happen just once in my many years of motoring - on the M5 on the way to Cornwall. Not driving a crab though, but certainly wakes you up! Enjoy your break David Down in Cornwall for a week. Heh! All the kids and girlfriends are down as well. They're catering, so Mum and Dad are getting a bit spoilt as well (although what they made of tonights vegetarian courgette lasagne I'm not quite sure - it was delicious.).
Throttle spring is shared with the Mini, so a new one is in the post. Also found a NOS Lucas brake switch in a red box - in the US - so that'll turn up in Leeds in a little while. Bound to work for another 47 years......

Got back last night. Car has run very well and returned 31 to the gallon and used less than a pint of oil. But..... n/s wheel bearing now goes wikiwikiwiki at low speed, and the o/s rubber joint is groaning and creaking at low speed. And the indicator switch made a horrible crack and no longer self-cancels when you signal right. More to do.
Chris.
