Well done Chris! Frustrating I know but actually quite fortuitous this was discovered before it became dangerous and hopefully by Tuesday evening you will have a road legal car you've virtually built yourself.

Well done Chris. After all your work if that was the only problem it shows what a cracking job you have done.
When I first moved to Newcastle 10 years ago I didn't know any garages (good or otherwise) around here so still used to take my cars to the tester I had used for years - some 25 miles each way. Took the 'crab down the motorway and parked it in the service area. Tester then pulled it on to the ramps and ......... a brake pipe sheared depositing fluid all over his immaculate testing area. That could have happened out on the motorway so I suppose i count myself lucky.
Roll on Tuesday pm

Nearly there. Whoever tested the car would be able to see from underneath that your were doing a proper job and not bodging it through for an MOT. I'm sure it will go through next week and I'm looking forward to seeing it again soon. It's been almost 18 months since that day back in Coventry.

Cheers for the update Chris. I assume with the Re-test they'll only be looking at the brakes?
Best of luck, but sounds like you should have a nice new MOT _b

Thanks. I'll take the positives. There are probably a hundred and one things to be checked, and it's failed on one, so that's pretty d@mn close. And, it's just as well it failed in a controlled environment, rather than doing 65mph down the motorway when you need a violent stop. Newe cylinder in place and new rear shoes, so hopefully she'll pass. You are correct, Indy, just the fail points to be re-checked.
Did a bit of tinkering today - couple of dents in one wing knocked out, filled, levelled and put into primer. It's almost like taking a breather.

Cheers, chaps.
LOCI club night up at York this evening, so, I took her up there. I did put some tools in the boot, just in case. After a few miles, the roads cleared and I gradually took her up to about 55mph for most of the way. I have to say, this car is an absolute honey. Very light and precise to drive, gear shift is very precise, rides well, reasonable acceleration and very light brakes. I obviously managed to get the servo repair right!
It's not perfect. There is no heat whatsoever from the heater, but also little temperature on the gauge. I suspect that the thermostat may be absent - investigation required. The oddball one is that running with the headlights on, operating the indicators turns the headlights off! Got to be an earthing issue. Not a good one to find out at 9.30pm in the dark. They're OK with the side lights, but not with the headlights. Should be straightforward to sort. Finally, she runs on for a bit after switching off. Timing... DAVID!
So, 65 miles travelled. Engine, transmission, steering, suspension and brakes are fine. Electrics to be honed. Lots of wind noise, so the doors need to be lined up properly - a job for at least two people. Window mechanisms to be sorted and that might be about it. I'm going to take her into college tomorrow and see what we can get done. And face my peers....
All in all, a good day.
Chris.

Well done Chris. I hope the "Yorkies" have followed this thread as no words could describe what you have done. As far as the running on is concerned, my advice would be to sort out the heater / thermostat / temp gauge before touching the timing or idle speed, although a quick check of the timing setting may be worthwhile. There are some borescope inspection cameras on EBAY for around £6 that my friend in Bristol has recently purchased that let you see inside the cylinders to check for carbon etc. They plug into a PC via USB and he has found free software to run on his £30 Amazon android. He says the quality of the pic is pretty good and there are a number of Youtube videos that demonstrate this. BoroscopeRegards David
