Nailed that bit under the gutter: Opened out the hole with the die grinder and managed to get a repair piece in. Very, very awkward and I'm not 100% happy with it. It does look a bit better after some further work with the die grinder. Swiped some filler over last weeks efforts - it's that cold that it doesn't appear to be setting off, despite adding a touch more hardener. Chris.

Chris - on the odd occasions I have had to use filler in freezing conditions I found I needed my heat gun to 'assist' the setting off.
More great work

Well, the filler did set off and has been flatted back, revealing the need for the second (much lighter) skim. Not a lot been happening otherwise, I'm afraid to say. It has been bitterly cold up here and I've basically come to a stop.

There was a strange glowing orb in the sky this afternoon and a hint of heat in the atmosphere, so I have fitted the replacement n/s/f displacer. I love my compressor and windy gun. Also took the opportunity to replace all dustboots on the ball joints. Then I found I'm out of Hydro fluid. Ho hum. Chris.

Where did you get them? Are they original or for another vehicle, I seem to recall Land Rover dustboot fit? David Also took the opportunity to replace all dustboots on the ball joints. Chris.

Strange to relate - dust boots on ball joints are now an MoT-able item and suddenly motor factors have selections of them by size straight off the shelf for about £1 a pop, including "O" rings as retainers.

Suspension pumped up on the n/s and taken up to height on the o/s. No drips.
Yet.

Suspension has stayed up. Re-hung rear o/s passenger door. Cleaned out threads in fixing plates and used brand new screws. Started on the o/s front door. Mowing off the paint to get to the blisters revealed vast amounts of filler, so instead of just stripping the bottom 2" of the door, I've had to clean off the bottom foot. This revealed a dent at the rear end and groove running most of the length of the door. You can make out the groove in the photo below. I've managed to push some of that out from behind. Various little holes have been Mig-ed in and flatted back. Mercifully nothing like as bad as the rear door. So, on with the filler: And after the first flat back: Second skim coat now on and drying. Hopefully I'll finish up with the damage repaired, rather than the bottom of the door being coated with ¼" of filler. Chris.

Chris
I have lost track of just how much more there is to do on the red car. I hope it's not too cold in your garage. Excellent work as usual.

Hopefully I'll have that door re-hung tomorrow. Wing trailing edge is bolted back down, the rest of the day has been spent trying to sort out the filler. Once it's on, I can tack the bottom of the wing to the sill.
Then just the nearside doors. And the bonnet.
Chris.

Grief.... Next year, at this rate, David. I really am struggling with the temperature and getting thoroughly tee'd off with it. I did get the drivers door back on the car. It took an hour and a half to get the lower hinge plate back into the door. This had the stump of a retaining screw in it, which I sorted at college last week. I re-cut all the threads at the same time. Getting the little s@d back into its slot inside the door was almost impossible. Anyway, I got there and it's hung, although not lined up. Next door to be recovered from the vaults was the front near side. Rust free. What?!?!?!? Well, it was. Huge blems in the paint though, so I've started sanding them off. No rust. No, I'm not sure if I believe it either. It can go back on the car, but this means the same procedure of bolting down the trailing edge of the wing. It didn't want to sit down properly at the bottom, so the new flange section I made had to have a couple of millimetres shaved off the bottom before it was close. Using a block of wood and a universal adjuster to line up the bottom edge of the wing to the sill led to a crack appearing in the wing bottom, so I'll have to strip that back and see what's happened. I'm not making the progress I want at the moment. Chris.

I share your pain Chris, bloody cold, nothing sets, its a joy to start welding to warm up, 2 steps forward 1 step back, as a for a rust free door i don't believe it i wish i had one. Any progress is progress that the way i see it Paul
