Hi Everybody, Need some info on the distributor fitted to my ute. It's a Lucas 45DE electronic not fitted to BMC's in Australia as far as I know, but apparently fitted to English MG's and other models of course. What type of ignition coil does this dizzy use, also part numbers for dizzy cap rotor button and resistor would be appreciated. Simmo.

Hi Simmo I think you may have more luck on an MG forum but possibly someone here such a Alexander (threelitre)who has later BL experience may be able to help. I had a quick look at some MGB websites and there appears to be quite a bit of confusion. As far as I can tell from the 45DE number you may have one of the original Opus systems that had a poor reputation. This link gives some good background but not too much practical help I'm afraid. Ignition systems MGand a wiring diagram 45DE wiringOther sites I have seen are asking questions but I didn't find anything like a definitive answer. As a general rule of thumb don't let the total resistance of the coil and ballast resistor fall below 3 ohms for these early ignition systems unless you have reliable specs saying otherwise. In the wiring diagram above you will see an additional resistor apparently for the electronic module inside the distributor and that the ballast resistor takes the form of a resistor wire. There are some Triumph parts for 45DE4 distributors here, I don't know if that helps or confuses further Triumph 45DE4Are you sure this distributor curve is right for you engine; has it been modified, twin cars, cam change etc? There is a 5 digit number starting "4----" on the body of the distributor. If you can find that we can tell you more about it.
Chris.

Dave, Chris Thanks for your input. I'll check for model number on dizzy body and get back to forum. My ute is warmed up with 1800S inlet manifold twin su's and extractors, and of course electronic dizzy, as it's an older restoration I may replace dizzy, coil and leads but which way to go I'm still decided, I was considering a Pertronix dizzy, coil, lead kit for around $200 Aussie dollars but I would appreciate anyones input on suitable replacement for this older setup. Simmo.

Any chance of determining which camshaft is in the car? If it is the same as the 1800S (or MGB if there is no mechanical fuel pump) then the distributor advance curve needs to be for those models. Tommy is the man here for showing you how to measure the cam profiles and can point you in the direction of his posts here. The distributor advance curve being matched to the twin SUs and camshaft is really more important than the type of ignition system as the wrong profiles can lead to engine damage and under performance. Once the curve position is resolved by personal preference is for an electronic system that allows for quick reversion to points at the side of the road using the original 45D4 /25D4 distributors. If you want to spend more then there are programmable distributors that allow you to match the timing to your specific engine. eg 123 tune programmable ignition distributoror for less cost a unit the allows you to program the ignition using the original distributor trigger eg Aldon Amethyst Programmable ignition unit Regards David Dave, Chris Thanks for your input.
