If you've ever wondered how an Austin 1800 and a Mini can perform in really adverse conditions for 12,000 miles - snow, crossing rivers and the Australia deserts in 50C temperatures I recommend you try and get a copy of Gelignite Jack's "Epic Road Trips" video. Worth every penny, for me anyway. What they did back in 1965 with what appears to be standard cars is incredible. Even the tyres look like the old textile SP41s.
The journey was made as part of Castrol's oil testing programme.
Gelignite Jack was a very famous Australian rally driver a very interesting character who got his name by letting off Jelly during rallies - how times have changed with health and safety regs! regards
David

There is also a great article about the same trip written by Evan Green, split over the November and December 1991 editions of Car magazine. I found them on eBay quite easily last year. Nick

I posted a copy of Autocar's review of the 1800 when it first came out in 1964 here after getting their permission. Perhaps "Car Magazine" would be as generous if you approached them. I'm sure many here would enjoy reading the article. Hi Nick Did you have a chance to contact Car Magazine to see if they have any objections to you posting the article? The more I see of Clarkson and Co in Africa (Top Gear Series 19) the Gelignite Jack video shows how great the 1800 is off road in comparison. Hello David, I've only just got round to writing to them so no answer as yet. If I am successful I'll probably need a bit of guidance getting it loaded up once I have done a scan. I think the article is edited from the author's book "Travels with Gelignite Jack" now long out of print.
