As I am sure you are aware there are three diff ratios, 3.81-1 for the auto gearbox, 4.187-1 for a sedan and 4.75-1 for the utility as I have an auto box can I put the auto diff into my utility gearbox? I do want a taller diff to increase highway speeds for les engine revolution. On the subject of diffs I notice that there is a lot of play within the spider gears on my auto diff are the thrust washers available so if I decide to change ratio's I can also reduce the amount of play and make to pick and deceleration smoother. As I understand it the gearboxes and final drives are matched pairs and generally should not be swapped around but perhaps someone here has done it and can advise. The UK 1800s, Mk2 on used a 3.882:1 diff on the manual transmission and 14" wheels to further up the ratio from the Mk1 cars. I understand that Oz never used the 3.882:1. Even with this diff top gear still feels too low. It's a shame they never developed a 5 speed gearbox with a higher ratio to suit the 1800 low down torque. Good luck regards David As I am sure you are aware there are three diff ratios, 3.81-1 for the auto gearbox, 4.187-1 for a sedan and 4.75-1 for the utility as I have an auto box can I put the auto diff into my utility gearbox? David,
My reading of the manual seems to say that the case itself is matched not necessarily the gears, so the gear carrier should be able to be changed I think, but then I have never opened a gear box to really have a look, I will have to remedy that?

Yes you are correct it is the g/box and diff cases and the final drive gear and pinion that are matched so you may be able to change the gears - I've never worked on them so I cannot advise you further. You will see in the manual that setting up the diff requires careful shimming to ensure correct alignment so you will need to check availability / dimensions of the shims. regards David David, My reading of the manual seems to say that the case itself is matched not necessarily the gears, so the gear carrier should be able to be changed I think, but then I have never opened a gear box to really have a look, I will have to remedy that?
