Got this old PYE among my piles of old stuff.. Thought about fitting it to the blue one, as its stereo just gave up. Yes, I like to keep the cars old fashioned, even when it comes to onboard entertainment:-) The radio is marvellous, great clear sound. Must have been a quality product in its day. Sadly, the cassette player seems dead. I suppose it's supposed to start as the cassette is pushed in. Nothing happens, or have I missed something? Any ideas appreciated! Regards, Tommy!

Hi Tommy
My hobby is electronics but not repairing car radios so I can only give you some ideas.
When you insert the cassette it should actuate some form of micro-switch that powers up the motor. This could be enclosed or open contacts given its age. IF you can get to the motor leads you can check for the power getting to it. It could be raw power to the motor or more likely there is some form of speed control circuitry driving it, so be careful not to check continuity with anything other than a digital meter. If you can disconnect a motor lead and pass say 3 volts through it you can rule this in or out. My money would be on the switch having failed or the switch actuator out of alignment or bad contacts - that can be cleaned.
Even if you get it running, I think you would probably need to replace all the rubber drive bands and pinch wheel and perhaps the take up clutch or risk it destroying tapes and spewing them out all creased up. Hopefully there is someone here with knowledge of these things. Have you tried Googling to see what the common faults are with this model - you may be lucky.
Regards
David
