Hi all!
I've just ordered a reconditioned steering rack for a RHD Reliant Scimitar GTE. As far as I can see, from pictures and google, this is indeed a LHD 1800 steering rack as the Reliant has the rack in front of the wheels.
Quite convenient for a LHD Crab owner:-)
Well, it still remains to see if it works. I hope and think so:-) Will keep it as a spare.
Regards, Tommy

Steering rack arrived today, and it is in deed the correct one for a LHD 1800. Great relief:-) However, the tie rods are shorter. I have a NOS tie rod overhaul set so suppose I can put these on, one of which you see in the picture. Actually I've never done this before, that is changing the tie rod. Don't feel confident about it so perhaps I'll leave it to a garage. Any advice on changing the tierods, anyone? Regards, Tommy

Ooh 'eck. Get the gaiter off. Unscrew the housing on the end and remove it and tie rod together. Tie rod should then push back through the housing.
I think - I'm sure I did this once, nearly 30 years ago. I don't recall it as a happy experience. Mind you, the rack was still in the car.
Chris.

If you look in the w/s manual you will see special tools for tightening the ball joint to the correct torque. There is a warning about not overtightening. When I had a problem with wear in a rack ball joint in the late 80's it was cheaper to fit a recon rack than buy the components so that's what I did as I wasn't confident to get it right. But off the car and with time of your hands have a look at it. If you don't feel confident are there any rack rebuilders there rather than a non specialist garage? Regards David Ooh 'eck. I was out of my depth here too so goy my mechanic to rebuild my rack when he did my ball joints at the same time. I reckon if you're game give it a go -Andrew

I'm rather curious to know why, if it's a re-con rack, it's got the wrong tie rods on it anyway. Scimitar is supposed to be a like for like replacement, albeit it upside down.

Yeah, it's a bit strange. Perhaps the Scimitar had shorter tie rods after all. Anyway, I'll try changing them myself. There's no rush but I have a slight play in it, so would like to fix it before the "MOT" in January. Found a tool on Ebay which I think will enable me to loosen and tighten the tierods, with a torque wrench. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CTA-Tools-4014-Inner-Tie-Rod-Tool-/140839794380?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item20cab4b6ccTommy

When I rebuilt the power steering rack on my 3litre, the track rods have been one of the lesser problems... You'll need a special tool though to unscrew the cups holding them in, from there on it is very straight forward.
