I fired up my 1965 Volvo tractor yesterday, in an attempt to crush the ice on the road up to my house (It has studded snow chains on the wheels...)
This tractor has the brilliant and extremely reliable 3 cylinder Perkins diesel engine. It has never failed as long as I've owned it and I doubt it's done it previously. It's one of those things which always starts right away and runs as it should, no matter how cold it is.
Anyway, yesterday it had some trouble. It started right away as always but it struggled when revving and black smoke came out the exhaust. There's normally very little, if any, smoke from it. It ran well at slow and fast idle, but as soon as I tried to drive or rev it, it would die out, run roughly and smoke.
Being extremely reliable I'm wondering if it's down to something frozen. It's been very cold and windy lately and it has been standing for almost two weeks. Outside, as always. Sadly, it does not have an engine heater, but again it has never needed one:-)

Have you checked the camshaft!!! ;D Sorry!
Have you taken it inside the barn to at least half thaw out? It sounds like some form of fuel starvation preventing it from running above fast idle. Just be very careful, high pressure diesel fuel can be quite dangerous if you dismantle anything after the pump.

Unfortunately the tractor is actually too big to enter the barn, Well it's more of a stable really, and very old, but I've made a garage of the ground floor. There's not much room above your head though:-) I guess I'll have to wait for warmer weather and see if it helps. I was thinking of too much fuel, from the black smoke, but I don't know.. There is a thermostart device on it allowin extra fuel from the return pipe, to enter the intake through a valve, to be preheated. I was wondering if this valve could be stuck. I've never used the thermostart though, it starts easily without. The valve could play up though I guess. Regards, Tommy

I have two diesel vehicles here, both Toyotas -the diesel is cheaper than petrol at around £0.65 per litre. The new one has an electronic system (D4D) but the old one is a truck about 20 years old great for carrying all kinds of things for the garden etc. It had a fuelling problem whereby the mixture was way too rich, clouds of black smoke but it didn't stop it revving, far from it! That was caused primarily by worn injectors, at 300km.
As your idle is OK that may discount injectors and fuel contamination, it still sounds like starvation, causing misfiring and the residual neat fuel being expelled accounting for the black smoke. BUT I could be totally wrong, my knowledge of diesels is very limited.
