Hi, I'm from Perth, Western Australia and about eight years ago I bought an Austin 1800 Mk 11 with a blown head gasket & drove it into my shed where it has been ever since. I'm considering restoring it this next year so have started looking around on the internet which is how I found this place! I'll be interested to have a good look around to see if there is anywhere on here that will help me to decode the VIN & engine number as I'd like to confirm that mine is a '69 and how it was when new. It seems to be pretty original, only surface rust, but needs a full restoration. Dave

These seem to relate to British 1973 models only (unless I missed something ) but I'd like to know if there's anything around for Australian built cars from 1968 onwards particularly. I've searched & searched on the 'net but can't find much at all. I have the chassis number and the engine number and would like to know if it's the original engine (I'm pretty sure it is) and also when exactly the car was manufactured. I bought it off a young guy here in Western Australia whose father was a farmer in Victoria and he told me it was a one-owner (his dad) who had left the car to him when he died. Its colour is "Sugarcane" and it has a blue interior and seems to be pretty original and worth restoring (that's my excuse, anyway ). Dave

Hi, Dave!
I'm not at all familiar with Australian produced crabs, but comparing with UK built cars I would say it looks like an early mk 2, possibly produced in 1968. However, I can't confirm this, so only a guess:-)
What points to this? Well, if the Australian cars can be judged like UK ones:
- you've got the early type indicator stalk, (and steering wheel horn push I suppose?) - you've got rectangular rather than circular fresh air vents - you've got the early type interior door handles - the wing indicators are above the waistline, rather than below as on later cars.
Perhaps if you share the numbers, the build date could be estimated if the numbers were compared to other aussie crabs here on the forum?
I once got a certificate with dates of build etc for a mk 1 1800, from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust. I'm not sure if they still offer this service and the big question: is this service available for Australian produced cars? Could be worth a try. Google heritace centre, certificate etc..
Regards, Tommy:-)

Hi It's been a while since I posted but my 1800 is still in the shed I was aware that there is an 1800 guru in Perth because lots of people have mentioned him, but no one knew where he was. But after much searching I've found him. He's really interesting to talk to and knows these cars inside out. He's even developed an air-conditioning system for them. So whilst the wheels of progress turn slowly, hopefully things will speed up in 2012. Dave

Don't worry mate, things will slowly speed up I didn't do much in my first term of ownership, but now this time I am going full steam it seems. The hardest part is starting. Once you're into it you wanna do more! First thing would be getting a new head gasket (Remember same as an MGB one, so easy to get) -Andrew
