As well as the landcrab I own a 1932 BSA three wheeler. In modern traffic it is becoming unpleasant to drive the longer distances to rallies.
I have been looking for a trailer for some time. I did not want a very large trailer because of the size of the Trike. Finally bought one on Ebay last week.
Naturally the towing car was to be the Landcrab, now just recently I hope you recall I was telling you all, how the points had closed up and how restoring the gap had transformed the car.
We started out from home this morning to drive to Tenbury Wells to collect the trailer, the wife insisted on coming she does not get many such treats. I commented how well the car was running and we arrived in Tenbury Wells smiling.
The trailer exceeded my expectations, paid for it and hitched up, it towed very easily and Yvonne had just commented how well the journey had gone when I felt a shudder go through the car. I thought the trailer had hit a pothole and ignored it. Soon it was obvious the engine was experiencing problems. It kept faltering and pulling up.
My first thought was the points had closed up again, substandard spares flashed through my mind. We pulled into a layby and I applied my impressive intellect to the problem. So no surprise there was not a happy outcome. Points gap ok. In desperation I changed the rotor arm, jiggled the su carb damper, swore quietly at the engine under my breath.
After some churning over engine restarted and I decided to try and get home, about thirty miles. Strangely the miss fire would come and go, eventually we limped into the drive I pulled up outside and uncoupled the trailer. When I tried to restart the car to garage it , no joy.
Yvonne offered to help, I put the car in top gear and rocked it back to recheck the points gap yet once again, still ok.
I connected up the spark gap tester and told Yvonne to spin the engine, moment of high drama as the car charged forward on the starter. Yvonne swears it was accidental, luckily the handbrake was on and slowed its progress, I moved quicker than I have for years.
No spark at the plugs, spark from the coil, must be the new rotor arm or the cap. No marks or tracking visible, tried another rotor arm, do you feel the desperation? Light rain begins to fall. I stand surrounded by rotor arms, must stop buying them.
I get the meter onto checking the low tension voltage. Odd results at the points then I realise that the nut that holds the feed wire onto the post with the nylon insulator is loose. I tighten the nut, the engine fires up we go for a run when I gun the engine hard, she pulls like a train.
I must check that Yvonne has not taken out extra insurance on my life and stop buying rotor arms am I becoming paranoid?
Regards Kels.
