Righto, she seems to be getting around 6.3km/L. That has been for a few short trips locally and one across the motorway (around 5km of it in heavy traffic)
I donno what I should be expecting around town? 10km/L+ would be nice.
At the same time I understand it isn't a mini etc lol
Will consult the manuals of course and go through the boxes and see if I can improve it.

Seems heavy to me... for town trips anything better than 8km/l seems unrealistic to me. I do not know about the single carb 1800s, but when cruising it is possible to get our 1800 S up to about 11km/l, but that needs some care when driving and well setup carbs.

Seems a bit thirsty to me. As an average I would say 10 is to be expected for a single carb, Roughly 11 on longer runs and 9 on town driving. Perhaps it's running rich, have a look at the plugs after a drive.

Check ignition timing and proper distributor adavance including the vacuum unit, it is crucial to good economy, much more so that the mixture setting (unless it's hopelessly out).
My experience though is that it's often down to the driver. You need to adapt to using the good low down torque and changing up early. If you are used to a car that needs a lot of revs around town to keep it going and drive the 1800 like that your economy will be very poor. I would expect somewhere around 9km/l (approx 27mpg for a single carb set up) around town, less if you are stuck in heavy traffic jams.

Cheers lads. With regards to the vacuum unit, does the piping need to be a certain dia. ? at the moment I have a 4mm dia. have tested by sucking in and it holds the vacuum (ask my tounge lol). Also I will check the air filter, might be a total mess. Thinking about forking out for a K&N pancake filter. Also I'm sure the carb needs some work, keen to get on with it, but have some exams coming up -Andrew

Hi Indy, Diameter of the pipe won't matter providing it doesn't collapse with vacuum applied.
K+N filter will allow more airflow, which effectively leans off the mixture, so you will have to adjust the jet in the carb to suit.

No, you adjust the existing one via the big nut at the bottom of the carb.

Yes 1 3/4". The HS series of carb numbers indicate how many eighths of an inch over 1 inch the carb’s throat size measures. So an HS6 carb is 1+(6x1/8) inches, or 1 3/4 inches. So looking at the SU site, just wanna check what size needle & type of spring I need? Manual doesn't say needle size, but SU says type 'ZH'. For the spring, Haynes says "Yellow" SU says "AUC 1167 Yellow spring" Edit, my 'autobooks' says ZH as standard for a Mk II, which would suit my 18H engine I assume -Andrew

You would be wise to change the jet as well as the needle, read up how to centre it before you start. Might be wise to change plugs and points, also condenser. check tappets. In other words a good tune up. check ignition timing and then start on the carb.

Cheers Kels, Yep that's what most books and sites suggest, checking everything else before the carb. Carb work will come last, just wanna check the details before I order the rebuild kit from SU. I will then give a crack at it over a weekend in December once I'm off work etc Plan of attack is to check/change plugs, valve clearances, timing & air filter -Andrew

Sorry to dig up an old thread but thought it needed an update. After my work over the last year (carb rebuild, tuning, new air and petrol filters etc) I finally got around to starting measuring my fuel use again. According to www.fuelly.com (great site by the way, good way to keep track of fuel use and to compare with others) I managed 10L/100km this last week. That's 28.MPG for you guys apparently. It was a mix of motorway, town and open road driving so I think she's seems to be about on the money going by what's been said here. -Andrew
