After finding myself quiet at work ive steamed into my Austin 1800 project in an effort to get it finished. Ive got to the stage where im ready to put my freshly painted engine back into the car (which im dreading) and wondered if anybody here had any useful tips regarding hoisting it in.
Im just after general tips that might make me a bit more confident to do this without breaking or scratching things!
Ive got some lifting brackets to lift from the 2 rocker cover bolts but where else can it be lifted from as its a big lump with the gearbox attched...
Cheers
Daniel

Hi! I've done this operation some times... and always use the same method. It works everytime for me, it's a bit scary everytime though:-)
I use a heavy duty lifting rope which I put around the unit in the following way (I've never used lifting brackets):
Keeping the rope at similiar length I put one loop around each side of the differential all the way up to above the rocker cover. The loop on the clutch side will have to be further out than the loop on the other side, to keep the unit sideways level as the clutch side is the heavier.
I then gather the rope ends in front of the middle of the rocker cover, in a giant knot there to which I hook the hoist.
Now hoisting carefully, the unit will have a nice tilt backwards, making the differential housing go clear of the bulkhead/ displacer tube. Make sure the unit stays reasonably level sideways. Have the big flat engine mounting AND the large panel it's mounted to, attached to the unit before hoisting. Align the rear part of this panel with the bulkhead mounting first, and fit a bolt there. Take care of hydrolastic pipe and brake pipes.. Then fit remaining mountings. When engine is hanging on all three mounts, fit lower steady bar.
Good luck! I hope this is to some help. It's a bit difficult to explain in a foreign language, so please ask if unclear:-)
Regards, Tommy:-)

Cheers Tommy, that is really clear so thanks for that, its getting that slight tilt that makes it easier and that will help me. I've already got the top mount and big bracket on. I was going to get most bits back on the engine with the exception of the rad to make things easier when it's back in. I think D Day will be Saturday...
Thanks for your help.

Make it Sunday and I might be able to run down and give you a hand.....
Put the radiator and shrouds on - it's a complete cow trying to do them with the engine in place. Access is very awkward to the screws and you will finish up scraping the radiator trying to drop it down. It's tight, but it will go!
Chris.

I wondered about the Rad but it looked too tight, but as you have experience ill go with that.
I might take you up on that Chris..If your in Leeds you are just over an hour away.
Many thanks.
