Update time, I replaced both sets of shoes with a pair that I got from Tony a few years back, got some copper slip on the slave cylinders and gave them a good move around and adjusted the brakes. Took it for a recheck today and she's all good, WOF issued and taxed for another 6 months! Thanks for all the advice everyone has provided -Andrew

She's still tootling around! Got a new battery on the weekend, as I reckoned the current one was on it's last legs, also I think the rating was a bit low in hindsight, so upped it to a 430cca one. I also replaced the negative/earth terminal lead as that was looking a bit tatty. So hopefully now I shouldn't have any issues starting her if I don't use her for a week. In other news, I must admit I have had an ad up to sell her in the Wolseley club newsletter, as some may know, due to time commitments. That being said I've had 4 or 5 people show initial interest in the car and no one has followed up! I think some higher power is telling me something lol. That said, I'm not fussed if she doesn't sell, I'm quite happy to keep on driving her. The plan has been to replace her with a car in slightly better nick or more modern, I have always fancied an XJ40, so have been looking out for them, but nothing suitable is popping up, so we'll see what happens. That being said, I did test drive a rather tidy Rover 2000 (P6) - see hereCheers, Andrew

I'm sure peppip will advise you on the XJ40 and the need to win the lottery to keep it going . My uncle had a P6 from new and it was a comfortable and classy vehicle that came out around the time of the Crab. While the Crab has "Tardis" like qualities the Rover is just the opposite. The Rover rear suspension was quite advanced but unfortunately I never got to drive the car to compare it with the 1800. There's plenty of advice on the web here. I don't know if there is a Tony Wood type support should you need parts. Have you lost interest in the Princess? regards David

Hey David,
In regards to a Princess, I'd happily buy one in decent nick, but they just don't seem to be around, most i have seen tend to be tired examples, and the idea is that if i were to replace the landcrab, it needs to be in better condition as to save me a bit of time.
Agree in regards to the space within the P6, not quite like the crab, but the driver's position is quite nice.
Part wise they seem well supported, the IL4s as well, but not as well as the V8.
As for the XJ40, I think I might park that idea as getting one in decent nick is out of my budget and heaven forbid should it breakdown! But that said, engine wise they're very reliable.
Cheers,
Andrew

Long time, no post (insert work, house, studies and family excuses here)! Well the latest in crab news is that around 2 months ago when my parents came down to visit, I was intending to loan my 'crab for my father to drive while staying. So I thought I'd go for a drive with him to get him familiar with her, unfortunately, I think he released the clutch a bit too harsh and broke a drive shaft coupling. Only managed to replace it around 3 weeks ago, while swapping them, I assumed that the rubber had failed and sheared off the steel cross (as it has in the past), but not this time: He did a number on that one! Her WOF has also lapsed, so need to sort that out. On the car front, this somehow ended up on my driveway: -Andrew

Hi Andrew
Welcome back! That driveshaft coupling looks like rubbish material from the photo, a genuine part? Must have been some acceleration to shear it!
So you finally took the plunge and went for a big Cat? It does look nice, one of the guys here has around 8 of them (the numbers vary) as he runs a business offering chauffer driven classic car tours of N Thailand. (He doesn't own 8 so he has 1 that runs, before the cruel jokes start!)
Regards
David

Hi Andrew
Looks good mate. Brings back memories of my uncles Jag. One very simmilar to yours. Now you will be able to say "I've got a Jag" how cool is that! Unfortunately his car suffered bady when rats had a go at the wiring. Very sad, he got rid of it after that! Not uncommon apparently according to dealer. Must have been something tasty in the loom!

Nice jag. I hope fuel is cheap over there. Big cats can certainly use it. I've had a jag xjs and currently have an xk8.
Regards the spider joint that must be a manufacturer fault. I don't think there is enough torque in a standard Crab to do that by simply dropping the clutch.

Ah, a VERY familiar dashboard there. 2 gauges to keep an eye on - the petrol one which on non motorway driving goes down quickly, and the other is a 'virtual' one measuring the rapid depletion of ones bank account. When actually running (yours is identical to the one I had) it offers pleasurable driving and fun sliding it around in snow, but oh, the costs involved. They still cause me nightmares

Hey lads,
Thanks for the comments. In regards to the coupling, I can't confirm or deny if it's OEM or not, it was one I got from the local Wolseley club. Would be a bit annoyed if it were a fake/dodgy one. Hopefully my replacement from Tony lasts a bit longer!
As for the Jag, yup she's gonna want to drink around town for sure, but one doesn't buy a 3.6L car for its economic prowess!
I can't comment on the tastiness of XJ40 wiring looms, if I found it, I'll come back and report it.
Hopefully it's not a basket case, but I like to think I've gone in with my eyes open, for better or for worse! It's just something I've had to get out of my system, hoping it'll be a good experience, if not, well at least I'll have ticked it off the list.
I was keen on a 4L one with the non-digital dash, but this early 3.6L came up for sale about 200km away and it ticked most of the boxes. The dash has grown on me quite a bit, it's got that real 80s feel to it. Plus it's pretty cool to own a car that's pretty much the same age as myself.

So I took the 'crab for a WOF, failed on two items:
1) Non-OEM servo 2) Wooden shims between the front seat runners and rails
Now this is annoying, as the servo has been on their for going on 3 years! I've spoken to a shop that certifies modifications and the chap there believed it isn't an issue if the car had a servo from factory, it doesn't matter if I replaced it with a non-OEM part. So I can prove that to the testing centre as I have plenty of docs.
Now the seat issue is interesting, again, in the years I've owned the car it's never been mentioned. Any idea if those wooden shims would be factory or not? I'm assuming not, if so I'll just remove them and go back to get my WOF lol

Hi Andrew
Wow the guy doing your WOF was how shall I put it, thorough! I have seen the wooden seat shims on several vehicles Australian and UK and would guess it was a dealer mod. No sign in the parts manual Unfortunately, David might have some better info! Just take them off to save the argument! As for the servo what type do you have on the car? The other advice I have is take it somewhere else! I had a similar thing in the uk with the power steering on my car and the tester refused to pass it because of a lack of knowledge of how the valve assembly works. He thought it was faulty because it moves! I took it to a different test station low and behold all good!
