Here we go again.......
Lucas C40 dynamo with Durite RB340 pattern voltage regulator.
Red light with ignition, dims on idle, goes bright then out as revs pick up. This is because the bulb blows.......... No charge to battery at all.
Regulator is the obvious candidate, any other thoughts anyone?
Chris.

I had this with a regulator - swapped for another one and it was fine.

I had exactly the same on a 1300. Changed the regulator, and it was fine:-)

Sadly, I rather thought you'd say that. The regulator is only a few months old. I will go and open negotiations with Coopers Auto Electric tomorrow.
Thanks,
Chris.

I will go and open negotiations with Coopers Auto Electric tomorrow. ....... Who told me to check the earth from the regulator. He was spot on as well! No continuity on the earth wire, so made up a new one and it's all working again. Always something new to learn. Chris.

It's funny how things trigger the memory. I had exactly the same earth problem with the regulator on my Mk1 car - I hd forgotten allabout it until your post. I now recall I fitted at thicker earth wire as the original seemed too thin for the current. regards david I will go and open negotiations with Coopers Auto Electric tomorrow. ....... I have made the new earth out of some very heavy wire. I have also made it very short, screwing it to the air inlet on the bulkhead. The original seems to go through the loom to the earth point at the front of the inner wing, which can't be a good plan.
Looking at that front earth point, I will probably strip the whole thing out and re-do it. Looks rather rough to me.
Chris.
