Forgot to say, make sure the crankcase breather and oil separator is the old type - I have read reports of the later type as used without the breather control valve causing the valve to fill up with oil.

Your smoother gear change could be for real as the throttle damper on the carb you now have fitted seems to help smooth the engine as you de-throttle mking gear changes easier in my experience.

I guess your saga shows how difficult it can be some times to separate electrical and fueling issues, especially from 6,000 miles away!
