Evening All,
Quick question for the folk out there running twin HS6’s and a sporty cam.
Which needles are you using with which cam and why?
I’ve got my new build up and running. I’m using a Kent 724 cam, which is their Hill Climb/High Torque cam.
I’m using the needles I had with the MGB grind I had in the old motor. I know someone is going to ask what I already have, but I haven’t pulled them out to check yet.
It’s running quite nicely now, just wondering if there’s a better set up.

Hi Ian, There is no quick answer that is going to be helpful to you sadly. There are too many variables! Your answer lies in finding a dyno in your area that is familiar with HS6 carbs and get them to set the engine up properly. This includes the ignition advance curve. Otherwise you will be chasing your tail. It's the only way if you are looking to get the best out of your setup. The Downton Stage 2 conversions used TZ needles with red springs (not yellow as used in the standard tune) and I believe the camshaft had a profile not dissimilar to your Kent. However, as Nick has pointed out there are so many factors that influence the SU needles profile the only way is to have the car set up on dyno. The ignition timing actually has more influence than the mixture as long as the latter is roughly right and your cam may require more advance at lower rpm and less at the top end. This can be achieved by using a programmable ignition such as 123 or Nodiz or by changing springs in the distributor if you have a lot of patience. Andrew A may have some further thoughts as he had experience with 270 and 285 Piper cams on his 1800S.

Thanks Gents,
I had a feeling it wouldn’t be an easy one.
I’ve been talking to Carlo from SU Midel here in Oz today and he’s given me a starting point.
